Plot summary

A Crime on the Bayou is the story of Gary Duncan, a Black teenager from Plaquemines Parish, a swampy strip of land south of New Orleans. In 1966, Duncan tries to break up an argument between white and Black teenagers outside a newly integrated school. He gently lays his hand on a white boy’s arm. The boy recoils like a snake. That night, police burst into Duncan’s trailer and arrest him for assault on a minor. A young Jewish attorney, Richard Sobol, leaves his prestigious D.C. firm to volunteer in New Orleans. With his help, Duncan bravely stands up to a racist legal system powered by a white supremacist boss to challenge his unfair arrest. Their fight goes all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and their lifelong friendship is forged.

required viewing to understand legacy of systemic racism

I'm not a liberal, and I'm a white middle-class American in the later years of the working part of my life. I've never been a member of any political party, primarily because I want to form my opinions free of peer pressure or dogma.I needed to give that preamble to say that this film should be viewed in that context. Try to put yourself in the shoes of the people involved. Understand how people like Duncan and his Mom, and Sobol are inspirational but also dealt with so much unnecessary pain and loss of the most precious of our assets, time, that could have been spent loving and living rather than fighting systemic racism and corruption. This is a timeless tale of putting one's life on the line due to a heartfelt belief that we and our institutions can be better and more just.

B&W and color film

Real history spoken by those who made it. Archivalists are heroes to me. Real history. Truth. I was still in school when it happened.
