ADRIFT - ** out of *****

Not to be confused with the Shailene Woodley theatrical film from a couple years ago, this early 90s TV movie feels like it resulted from the popularity of an Australian movie from 1989 called DEAD CALM starring Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill. While not exactly alike, there are definite similarities. Sadly, this one pales in comparison. It is a rather unpleasant experience with scenes obviously meant for tension and suspense that instead come across as merely gratuitous - thankfully the more gruesome moments take place offscreen. To what degree this movie works is thanks to the underrated acting chops of Kate Jackson. I've always felt she was an actress just a project or two away from great things. (She was the first choice for Meryl Streep's role in KRAMER VS KRAMER, but the producers of CHARLIE'S ANGELS wouldn't let her out of her contract.) She carries the bulk of this project on her shoulders, and one can't help but wish she was in a better movie with better performances - a young actress named Kelly Rowan is absolutely dreadful as the female antagonist. It's an instantly forgettable movie that sinks almost as badly as the Titanic.

Almost nothing to say.

Barely anything to say on this one. Couple get taken hostage by other couple on boat.

About 30 occasions along the way where they could've or should have escaped

But they never managed it.

In the end they way they do is pretty tame, so much so you expect the kidnappers to still be alive when the credits roll.

It's a job to stretch this out to 10 lines.

I suppose the lack of a 'finale' made it slightly more true to life and I made it through to the end.

Definitely not as creepy a boat movie as...

Voyage from 1993 with Rutger Hauer, Eric Roberts and Connie Nielsen, And the Sea Will Tell with Rachel Ward and Richard Crenna from 1991, both of which I prefer over Dead Calm as a few here have already mentioned here. I very much like Bruce Greenwood, which is why I sat through this movie in the first place but am certainly disappointed. I would definitely check out the first two movies as mentioned, especially And the Sea Will Tell (from the true crime story written by the lawyer, Vincent Bugliosi, who actually defended the woman in the story years ago. I remember it being a bit hit when it played on television years ago).
