Entitled South Americans

What really annoyed me here was the daughter who over and over again proclaimed that they would live in Europe as there were 'more opportunities there'.Well, guess what - Europe is full and doesn't need any more foreigners looking for opportunities and bringing crime with them. Her entitled assurance that she can live wherever she wants really ruined the movie because NO ONE in Europe wants more of their kinds.

"Almost There" - Gorgeous setting, solid cast, some laughs, but the plot falls short

I had reasonably high hopes when I started watching Almost Family. The concept seemed promising, the cast looked great, and I was in the mood for a light-hearted comedy with cultural flavor. And to be fair, the film does have its moments. But overall, it ended up feeling like a missed opportunity - it's almost there, but not quite.Let's start with the positives. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the film was the natural comedy that comes from the cultural and linguistic differences between Brazilian Portuguese and Argentinian Spanish. For anyone familiar with both languages, the mix-ups and "false friends" can be absolutely hilarious. The film plays with this in a clever and relatable way. I found myself laughing out loud during a few of these scenes. It was smart to include that cultural nuance, and I think it added a fresh and playful tone to the movie. The cast is definitely another highlight. The actors have charisma, chemistry, and a great sense of timing. You can tell they're enjoying themselves, and that energy is contagious. They manage to elevate the material in many scenes, and some of the comedic bits work very well purely because of their delivery and natural charm. Honestly, with a different script, this same cast could easily carry a much more engaging film.Visually, the movie is a treat. The locations are beautiful - whether it's the urban shots, interiors, or outdoor moments, there's a warmth and charm that comes through in the cinematography. The wardrobe and art direction are also on point. It feels like a feel-good movie from the start, and it tries very hard to keep that tone consistent throughout. In many ways, this could have been a great comfort movie: light, breezy, beautiful to watch, and emotionally uplifting.Unfortunately, what really drags the movie down is the script. The plot is extremely predictable and overly sentimental. The emotional beats feel forced, and the storyline relies too heavily on clichés and tired tropes. It's like the film was afraid to take risks or say anything new. Everything feels too safe, too neatly wrapped, and a little too sugary. That's not necessarily a bad thing in a comedy, but here it feels like the heart of the story is missing - or at least underdeveloped. There were moments when I could see a better movie hidden underneath. The dynamics between the characters have potential, especially when they touch on deeper issues like identity, family expectations, and cultural clashes. But instead of digging into those themes with nuance or depth, the film brushes past them and goes back to surface-level jokes or overly sweet dialogue. It needed a more daring, more refined screenwriter to shape those ideas into something truly special. Some jokes land, but others fall flat or feel recycled. And as the movie progressed, I found myself less invested in what was going to happen next - not because I didn't care, but because I already knew what was coming. It's the kind of movie where you can predict most scenes before they start, and that predictability eventually dulls the charm of even the best parts. To be clear, this isn't a bad movie. It's entertaining enough to watch on a lazy afternoon, especially if you enjoy Latin American culture and want something light. But it could have been so much more. With a stronger script and more emotional grounding, it might have been a real gem.In the end, Almost Family is pleasant, charming in places, and occasionally very funny - but ultimately forgettable. It's like a beautiful cake with a bland filling. I'd still recommend it if you're looking for something light and pretty to pass the time. Just don't expect too much from the story.Final score: 6/10 Great cast, lovely visuals, fun cultural humor - but the writing needed more substance. It was almost there.
