An answer to all the users who did not appreciate "April"

I read the comment published on Aug 10. Here is an answer to this user, which could also stand as a general response to anyone who dismisses "April" in that way:I think your reaction to April is a good reminder of how divisive Dea Kulumbegashvili's cinema can be-but I'd argue that many of the things you call "empty" or "meaningless" are actually central to her artistic intent.First, the long, deliberate shots are not just stylistic excess-they create a very specific atmosphere, one where silence, waiting, and tension become part of the emotional fabric of the film. In "April", the camera's patience allows us to experience time almost physically, to sit with uncertainty and unease in a way that mirrors the protagonist's own state of being. What might seem like "nothing happening" is often where the film does its deepest work.Second, regarding the themes of abortion and childbirth: these are not superficial or recycled plot devices. They're elemental aspects of life, especially in the contexts of patriarchy, tradition, and faith that Kulumbegashvili is exploring. By framing them in stark, unflinching terms, she pushes us to confront realities that are usually either sensationalized or ignored. This is not a film "about" abortion so much as a film about the fragility of agency, the weight of expectations on women, and the existential silence that surrounds their choices. As for being "eccentric" or "creepy"-I'd say that's a strength rather than a flaw. Kulumbegashvili's sound design and imagery are not there simply to disturb but to unsettle our sense of normality, to reveal the violence simmering beneath seemingly mundane social and religious rituals. Finally, I think calling it "pretentious" misses the point. "April" is ambitious, yes, but it's also deeply sincere. It doesn't hand out easy emotions or simple resolutions because life, especially for women in the situations it portrays, rarely offers them. The film's power lies precisely in its refusal to compromise, and that's why it has resonated so strongly with critics and festival audiences. You don't have to like "April", of course-but dismissing it as "sh*t" feels unfair to a work that is clearly crafted with rigor, vision, and a distinctive voice. If anything, Kulumbegashvili has proven that cinema can still be challenging, poetic, and unsettling in ways that stay with you long after the credits.

Trying to be cool

The movie has deep ideas about social problems, but unclear direction makes it hard to watch. There's also completely unnecessary nudity, which feels meaningless and adds nothing. The director talks about problem but doesn't offer any solution. I understand that it's a complex topic, but simply showing the problem doesn't hep to explain or ease it.The long static shots make movie boring. I don't understand why director chose to keep one frame for almost minute. I also didn't understand horror-like. Maybe it was meant to visualize the main actress's sins but it felt a bit cringe.Unfortunately this is another disappointed movie from Georgia.

Far too long for the amount of story

The film demands patience-over two hours of slow, quiet, drawn-out establishing shots for maybe 30 minutes of actual narrative. When every scene is paced the same, the emotional weight of any individual moment is diluted. The nudity is excessive and distracting; we see the protagonist's breasts nearly as often as her face, with no symbolic or narrative justification. Multiple landscape shots focus mainly on the sky, which fails to establish a meaningful sense of place. The film ultimately feels self-indulgent and hollow. I would not recommend, unless 3/4 of the film had been left on the editing floor.
