On paper, it's an intriguing premise.

Ba (which means "Father") tries to be a story about love, sacrifice, and redemption, but ends up as a confusing mess that can't decide what kind of movie it wants to be.The story follows Daniel (Lawrence Kao), a single father living in his car with his young daughter Colette (Kai Cech) and their loyal dog. Life is hard; they sleep in parking lots, scavenge for food, and Daniel tries to protect what little innocence his daughter has left. One night, he stumbles upon a mysterious bag containing cash and a note. The message is simple but sinister: if he takes the money, he must accept the role of the Grim Reaper, the one who decides who lives and who dies.On paper, it's an intriguing premise. The idea of a desperate man forced to choose between saving his daughter and condemning his soul could've made for a powerful supernatural drama. But Ba never leans fully into its potential. The film constantly shifts tone; one moment it's a gritty father-daughter survival story, the next it's a dark fantasy with supernatural rules that never gets explained.Visually, the movie looks fine, with muted tones and an occasional haunting atmosphere. But emotionally, it's empty. Lawrence Kao plays Daniel with a kind of distant weariness that feels more like confusion than depth. Kai Cech, while charming, has little to work with beyond looking sad and hopeful at the same time. The chemistry between them, which should've been the heart of the film, feels forced and mechanical. The supernatural element, the so-called "Grim Reaper curse," feels like it was added to make the movie stand out. Instead, it derails the human story that might have worked on its own. Every time the film starts to get real, when Daniel struggles with guilt, poverty, or fatherhood, it throws in another unexplained vision, shadow figure, or cryptic message that kills the momentum.By the end, Ba doesn't offer answers or emotions, just confusion. It's not a thriller, not a horror, not even a proper drama. It's an empty box pretending to hold something meaningful. And much like the mysterious bag Daniel finds, what's inside turns out to be a curse rather than a blessing. If you're looking for a film about a father and daughter facing impossible odds, watch Sweet girl instead. Ba might have had heart in concept, but somewhere along the way, it lost its soul.

Definitely an interesting script...

Stumbling upon the 2024 horror movie "Ba" by random luck here in 2025, of course I had to watch it, given my love of all things horror. And I will say that the movie's synopsis definitely sounded interesting.Writer Benjamin Wong certainly put together a rather unique script and storyline. It was one that I found to be entertaining and enjoyable, though I figure that it is one that will not easily entertain the average viewer.Of the entire cast ensemble, I was only familiar with Michael Paul Chan and Brian Thompson. The acting performances in the movie were good.Visually then I will say that the movie was fair. While it wasn't jaw-dropping special effects, nor were there an abundance of special effects, then the effects that were in the movie certainly were adequate. My rating of writer and director Benjamin Wong's 2024 movie "Ba" lands on a five out of ten stars.

Emotional and surprising

No spoilers:Ba is entertaining! It grabbed me at the beginning and had me wondering what would happen all the way until the end. The actors were pros and I felt the chemistry between them. The story was well thought out and also quite emotional - at one point it made me a bit teary eyed. I loved seeing so much Asian American talent on screen. The movie surprised me in the best way possible. I watched Ba a second time, which was fun, to try to catch things I may have missed in the first viewing. It's a non-traditional sci-fi/horror movie. I don't watch scary movies, but this one wasn't very scary at all, so don't let that deter you. Hopefully more people get a chance to watch this indie.
