Plot summary

Jerry (Jamie Draven) was an idealist when he served in the first Gulf War. But when he was later deployed to Iraq, Jerry was an older man, a father of three and embittered by broken promises and unfulfilled desires. When Jerry returns from Iraq he has been transformed by horrors that cannot be forgiven. He lives a life of poverty, his children afraid of him and his wife, Nora (Vinessa Shaw), unsympathetic and unhappy. When Jerry discovers that Nora has betrayed him, his anger and despair drive him to commit an act so heinous and irreversible that nothing he had experienced in combat could have prepared him for.

Great Cinematography, Preposterous Tone and a True Cop Out Ending

Stunning juxtaposing of beauty and tragedy

This powerful film has stayed with me for weeks, with its searing pain and wrecked, unforgettable beauty. As powerful as any war (or anti-war) story can be, it shows interior battle-fields. Memory is piled on memory - all mute - with tragic lack of healing, until desperation invades the soul and runs lives into heartbreak and ruin. The terrific cast is so deeply affecting because of the radiance within the main characters. The little girl is a wonder! Jerry and Max have a relationship which says more about current war than any overtly political statement.Although the film is a long tour-de-force of emotion and drama, the bleakness of the circumstances is uplifted by a beautiful, dead-on score. Moments like long gazes at gorgeous skies, or exquisite background vocalises, drive home what could have been, and lift the film into an epic realm.

Well intentioned movie, great score and cinematography, missed the mark overall

I do believe this was a well intentioned movie and I'm very hesitant to pick on a movie that tries to draw attention to the mental health issues Veterans might have. I feel like the writer(s) and director got some stuff right, the music was good, and the acting was decent. The little girl really did the best job overall. The cinematography was excellent. I won't get into whether the vets particular behaviors are accurate as everyone is different, w different experiences and reactions. I do wish that any movie w military subject matter would hire a knowledgeable advisor.Diner scene- First off, Marines, or anyone in the military generally don't galavant around town in their "cammies" or bdus when off duty. But this is forgivable. What isn't is the uniform the one "Marine" is wearing was laughable. First of all, the pattern was waaaay out of date- it was only used from like 90-91and is actually kind of scarce. It had No rank, No name tapes, no EGA, no US Marines, nothing. The USMC patch wasn't issue, or even close. The uniform was brand new- it did not just return from a deployment or any type of use. Also his cover (hat) wasn't even military issue, much less USMC issue. This sounds nitpicky but trust me, it's not. This is easy stuff to get right. I mean, was there anyone at all w military experience editing or pre screening this stuff?Also, I was thinking more of a First Blood type movie- what I got was a kinda boring drama w almost no action. Anyhow, not a bad movie, I just wish they'd done a few things differently. It could've been very good but just was ok.
