Having a controversial image by challenging social norms can take you far

The documentary about the well-known Queen of Pop traces Madonna's early days in music and the influence she left on American society. Begin by explaining Madonna's arrival in the big city and provide some details about her relationship with her family. There isn't much context, but it's clear that Madonna grew up in an environment where her family had to follow certain traditions. Something Madonna wanted to leave behind, and she was determined to travel to the city to find a purpose. One minor detail that the documentary bothers to explain a bit is Madonna's start in music by collaborating with a band that never took off. This is a minor detail with some significance, since it was from here that Madonna began writing her first songs. Then it moves on to the success she achieved with "Everybody" and "Like a Virgin," but omits the productions of the first two albums to which these songs belong. Madonna's foray into the world of cinema with Desperately Seeking Susan and Who's That Girl is also ignored. What the documentary focuses on quite a bit is the controversial image Madonna has had and the criticism it has generated from society. Madonna left an influence on younger audiences, but due to the conservative mindset of the time, she was targeted by the critical eye of adult audiences who clung more to traditional values. The documentary clearly explains how this was blown apart by the first live performance of "Like a Virgin." It is from this point on that the controversial figure began who made Madonna loved by some but reviled by others. The documentary also takes into account another fundamental aspect of Madonna's iconography: her connection to the LGBT community. From the outset, one of the artist's recorded statements makes it clear that this community and its culture served as inspiration for her works. Both the music, the lyrics, and the artist's image reflect the joy of gay culture. This community has always been characterized by a cheerful and colorful image. Many of Madonna's friends have been members of this community, and she has also been shown to have defended the LGBT movement during the AIDS outbreak. Something that also shaped her image at a time when people were quite prejudiced. That support was enough for Madonna to win the affection of the LGBT community. It also shows how this action affected her relationship with Sean Penn. The documentary only explains the very basics of Madonna's relationship with Sean Penn and the media's intervention in shaping the singer's image. But the domestic problems the couple had weren't explained. The time when Madonna was assaulted by Sean Penn isn't mentioned. This is something that should have been explained in more detail. What is clear is that Madonna earned an image that challenged the norms of that era. She reached her peak with the song "Like a Prayer." This was one of the artist's most high-profile controversies, and although the context is known, the documentary doesn't explain the incident in greater detail. There's also a mention of the Blonde Ambition event, but it doesn't go into it, since that was covered earlier in Truth or Dare. Madonna had explained at the time that she is a woman of Catholic faith, and it is well known that she was raised under that doctrine. Her goal with Like A Prayer was to strike a balance between her faith and her sexual nature. Something she managed to achieve, and that's why the song and music video ended up being pure poetry. The documentary devotes its final minutes to the launch of the book Sex during the promotion of the album Erotica. Here it makes the mistake of omitting the album's production, but it does mention the reaction that the book Sex provoked in society at the time. It could even have touched on the time Madonna faced harsh criticism in Argentina for the film Evita, but by then she already had a high status and many defenders. What's clear from the documentary is that it doesn't bother to delve into Madonna's musical career and her rise within it. What is most relevant here is the controversial image that led the artist to challenge conservative norms. The influence she left behind gave female audiences the opportunity to embrace their sexual nature and express it freely without limits. It wasn't easy to address, since sexuality was taboo at the time, but Madonna was one of the people who dared to break it. She also became a voice of support for the LGBT community, which earned Madonna the same level of prestige within that community as figures like Freddie Mercury. So the point of the documentary is that Madonna's controversial image is what has shaped her into a symbol of female strength, the freedom of women's sexuality, and support for the LGBT community. So, Becoming Madonna isn't a music documentary that lives up to Truth or Dare. Of course, the lack of any mention of several key moments when Madonna created her most iconic songs makes this documentary feel incomplete. By addressing Madonna's controversy head-on and without providing deeper context, the documentary ends up being quite superficial and weak. More events from her life and career could have been mentioned in a maximum of 30 to 40 minutes. It's not an entirely satisfying documentary for those who enjoy Madonna's music, but at least it offers informative details that help understand the controversy surrounding her image. Although Madonna is now synonymous with a bygone era, like many 1980s figures, her influence is undeniable, having given rise to artists such as Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga. So her controversial image was a catalyst for a generational shift. Becoming Madonna is only recommended for those interested in seeing how Madonna earned such a controversial image that turned her into the musical icon who broke barriers and transcended them. My final rating for this documentary is 6/10.

No reflection of her wonderful voice

I thought the film was all about exploitation of her projection of sexuality. There wasn't any mention of her wonderful voice over the decades or her charitable work. It was almost pornographic in places. Sometimes, artists are encouraged to be something they may not necessarily want. Madonna is a true singing talent and that is what the film should have been about. What about showing her skills with musical instruments and not showing other items of her body.As an artiste she is worth far more than was being depicted in the film. Was this a film for voyeurs? If so it should not have been entitled Madonna.
