gripping story, unappealing package

Before Valentine's was a gripping story underneath, it just wasn't well packaged

DELICIOUS

-There were lots of captivating characters: Uche Montana stepped up her game by playing the crazy, flashy, sassy hairdresser, while Bolaji Ogunmola played the overzealous and religious hairdresser.

We can't forget Ben Touitou's feminine behavior even to the extent of wearing nail polish?

Great that the story included various characters which made us curious to know them more

-The film was a pure depiction of the flashy lives people like to put out in front of others. We live more freely when we do not subscribe to social conditioning

-Costume and makeup designs displayed the bougie appearance the characters were all aspiring for. Everyone looked polished and fancy

BLAND

-The photography had no control over the lighting; the extreme brightness distorted the images

-The sound engineering was releasing echos and humming sounds

-The story wasn't told and directed in a thought-provoking or charismatic way. The constant shots in the salon made the screenplay a bit dull.

The story centered around a salon but we barely saw any impressive hairstyles

-Acting, for the most part, was weak, especially when it came to Tamara's husband, Baaj adebule, Dr Sid, etc

All of these factors worked to deflate a potentially good movie.

Mid

Before Valentine

Set in a high-end salon, Before Valentine tries to dazzle viewers with what the Valentine season is all about (love and lovers), but, it ultimately doesn't succeed at this.

Before Valentine doesn't bring anything new to love, and even the themes it tries to raise are done in a lackluster manner. The events in this movie are mundane, but the setting and aesthetics they're displayed in come off plastic and out of reach. It also seems like the nigerian-ness has been sucked out of it, making it less relatable and that leaves it in a tricky situation seeing as it's not Nigerian enough and also not western enough.

There are also various suspend your belief moments scattered around in the movie that are off-putting. The subplot of Sugar's mum and the supposed robbery and how it's concluded are very unbelievable; it's also incredibly hilarious how we're meant to believe that the hairdressers were stuck making those hairstyles for their clients for the whole day. Trying to cram all the events of the movie into one day was highly detrimental to the movie.

In all, Before Valentine is a light hearted movie about love, friendship and human connections, but, if you're looking for something new or even gripping, it doesn't deliver on that.

Are you kidding me?

Do you miss the excitement of taking a test you know you'll fail? Maybe the glee of being a petite woman and slowly realising your tinder date slipped something in your drink because, whatever it is, just started working. And guess what, i know he doesnt have a lambo because we're now getting in his white van!!! Tee hee! Or Maybe you just want all the joy and sensation of pushing out potato sized kidney stone? Then this is the film for you. Theres no direction to the film, you get constant lense flairs, the dialogue is often pointless and the mic frequently clips and cuts out. Wtf. Wt actual f.
