Plot summary

A volatile, oil-rich Nigerian community wages war against their corrupt government and a multi-national oil corporation to protect their land from being destroyed by excessive drilling and spills. To seek justice, a rebel organization kidnaps an American oil executive and demands that his corporation end the destruction and pollution. Inspired by true events, Black November is the gripping story of how a community rises up and takes drastic measures to make sure their voices are heard.

Serious Film

In the Niger River delta, where the air and water are polluted by the oil industry that makes up 95% of Nigeria's exports, Mbong Amata struggles to be a voice of reason in a landscape with American oil companies, a military dictatorship, and corrupt tribal chiefs on one side, and increasingly radicalized tribal elements that eventually resort to violence.This Nigerian-US co-production is a 60% reshooting of the previous year's Black Gold: new American players and changes to the script by writer-director Jeta Amata to reflect changes in the current situation. The rebels are shown as being in the right, but ultimately helpless in the face of money, greed, and arrogance of the military. I don't recognize any of the Nigerian actors, but American performers include Anne Heche, Mickey Rourke, Kim Basinger, and Viveca Fox.
