A likable true life dramedy

The little 2024 film that could, earning a raft of audience and critical praise as well as a large collection of festival awards at some of the industries premiere events, one suspects that the life of Tracie Laymon's debut feature Bob Trevino Likes It is only just beginning as more audiences discover this based on a true story tale for themselves.Based on Laymon's own personal experiences after meeting with an online contact while searching for a connection with her real life father, Trevino clearly comes from heartfelt place and while it walks the same path of many similar low-budget character driven films of the past, it's hard not to be moved and inspired by this small but effective offering that is worked brilliantly by its two leads. Finally getting a chance to test herself in the feature film landscape after making her mark in hit HBO series Euphoria, a lot of Trevino's success rests on the shoulders of Barbie Ferreira and she is more than up for the task.A tricky role for any performer to deliver on, with Lily being a complex and flawed iteration of Laymon's own-self, Ferreira does a fantastic job of keeping Lily on the right side of the ledger while at the same time creating a memorable chemistry with her off-sider John Leguizamo who is as good as his been in years as the softly spoken and kind-hearted Bob, reminding us all that when he is given the right material and he himself invests, he's one of Hollywood's most reliable character actors. With her two leads on fine form there's any easy-going nature and feel to Trevino yet while viewers may feel as though they have everything pegged as the early stages march on, Laymon has some tricks up her sleeve with where Trevino goes and how it goes there, creating an emotionally resonate and powerful watching experience that is sure to surprise many unsuspecting viewers unaware of what Trevino has too say about life, love, friendship and finding ones way in this big scary world. In a day and age where small independent films like Trevino feel like a dying breed as they are forced into fighting for space in cinemas or standing out in crowded streaming marketplaces, Laymon's relatable and humanly focussed dramedy isn't a revelatory experience but its a timely reminder of the power of films of this shape and size.Final Say -Sure to discover a wide-reaching and passionate fanbase as a larger audience accesses the film on home media, Bob Trevino Likes It is a heartfelt and heart-warming little tale that features two fine central performances anchoring proceedings.3 1/2 possessed toilets out of 5.

Unexpected great script

This movie seems different from others. We are not used to seeing movies from a young woman and an older man just becoming friends.Usually there is something romantic about it, in this movie you even maybe keeps expecting it to happen but it doesn't. It's purely a friendship relationship being build from two humans that somehow are alone in their world. That's the key of this movie, it just show us that you can meet new people on your life and care about them no matter how long you've met them. Also it shows a scenario that I think usually happens to a lot of people which is having a parent that doesn't care about you. It kind of explains why the main character is the way she is, and is very interesting how they build her "breaking through" this.It builds up from comedy to drama and mixes up as the story goes by. It's what I called a comfy movie, where you watch and can feel happy about it afterwards. Strongly recommend.

a sweet and sour life lesson

Greetings again from the darkness. Bob Trevino is the kind of father we all wish we had. He's the kind of father that would raise kids who would grow into good citizens, resulting in an improved society. Only that Bob Trevino is not Lily Trevino's dad. Her dad is a raging narcissist, or more accurately, a self-centered jerk. This feature film debut from writer-director Tracie Laymon is 'inspired' by her true-life story, albeit with enough elements changed to avoid a lawsuit from her dad. That part doesn't make for such a warm-fuzzy story, but the film she delivers wraps us in a coat of kindness and niceness and feel-goodness (not really a word, but it fits).Lily Trevino (Barbie Ferreira, NOPE, 2022) is a twenty-something live-in aid for a woman who uses a wheelchair. Lily is the level of niceness where people notice immediately, including her therapist who ends their session by sobbing profusely after hearing Lily's story. We get a couple of doses of Lily interacting with her father, Bob Trevino (a perfectly obnoxious and venomous French Stewart), before their big blowup then ends with his telling her daughter he wants nothing else to do with her. As viewers, we believe she is better off, but Lily's niceness doesn't allow her to give up on her dream of having a good relationship with him.In Lily's efforts to reconnect, she searches on Facebook for 'Bob Trevino' and somehow ends up with a Bob Trevino who aligns with her idea of the perfect dad. Bob #2 (a terrific John Leguizamo) quickly embraces the opportunity to be a friend ... and a father figure (despite having no kids of his own). His wife (Rachel Bay Jones) is obsessed with scrapbooking, and we have a difficult time deciphering their communication and unorthodox relationship. She doesn't seem to have the same concerns most wives would have if their husband started spending an inordinate amount of time with a young woman. Regardless, the friendship between Lily and this Bob evolves into something special. Beyond the friendship, he becomes the father figure she dreams of, and she becomes the daughter figure that he always hoped for.Laymon's story includes dad jokes, a rage room (monetizing the OFFICE SPACE idea), health issues, and a creepy look at dating options in a senior citizen trailer park. Most importantly it makes the point that "chosen family" is often more important and impactful than blood family, and a supportive friend is invaluable. French Stewart and John Leguizamo have had long careers as dependable actors, and both are excellent here. The film has won a stream of festival awards (deservedly so) and Laymon chooses to include a dose of reality over the closing credits.Opens on March 21, 2025.
