Plot summary

Trapped in their Hollywood Hills home, a family fights for survival when caught between a raging wildfire and a pack of savage coyotes. As the city loses power and chaos spreads, nature turns feral - and what starts as isolated attacks escalates into a terrifying siege they may not all survive.

Oh dear lord the writing....

Justin Long has been in some questionable movies, so maybe this should have been an indicator as to how this movie would go....The writing is diabolical. Diabolical! I don't want to give any spoilers, but you will laugh at some of the coyote situations.The family scenes are so cringeworthy and embarrassing that it feels more like a cheesy tv series (like Z-Nation, which actually gets away with it) than a movie co-starring Kate Bosworth. This movie does not reflect well on her either by the way.The plot is questionable from the outset, and implausible throughout.This is not one of those it's so bad it's good movies. It's just plain painful.

Cruel to Animals, Bad CGI, Justin Long OMG

With an interesting premise, Coyotes disappointingly is a misguided, heavily handed mess of a creature flick. Colin Minihan has no restraint and just throws in so many ideas chaotically - its ambition is more than it's worthiness. Even when it finds a groove or two, it squanders it immediately.The CGIs are dreadfully done.The characters are cartoonish - I mean the irony that Hollywood actors think they're making a statement with this film?The daughter isn't just a brat - she's a nasty piece of work. Do they really write characters like this and think we're supposed to be liking this kid? She's actually the worst character and of course won't be eaten that's a shame.Justin Long really needs to look at what he's doing with the types of roles he chooses. He is a good actor but he really playing some god-awful characters - this guy is the biggest idiot. Long though is playing it in a way he thinks he is charming - he is just awful.Kate Bosworth has to be the female powerhouse to protect him. That's all she is - she's smarter than him, stronger than him, better than him. That's the story.They are married too in real life - this is a nice way to understand their dynamics here. LOLOh, and the film is nasty towards animals. Not cool.

Decent thrills, Little substance

It promises a tense survival thriller but delivers only half the bite. While the setup, a wealthy family trapped by wildfires and hunted by coyotes, has potential, the execution feels uneven.The suspense works in parts, and Justin Long gives a decent performance. The digital coyotes, meant to be menacing, often look artificial and drain the tension from key scenes.Overall, it's a decent one-time watch with a few gripping moments, but not enough to leave a lasting impression.
