Plot summary

A man struggling to come to terms with the sudden death of his girlfriend in an accident six months prior signs up for a sleep trial that allows him to reconstruct his life with her through the use of lucid dreams.

An excessively long fantasy drama about a tragic love from Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo.

A man named Nicolas (Henry Golding of The Gentleman, Assassin Club, Snake Eyes) is devastated by the death of his girlfriend Daniela. Unable to overcome the loss, Nicolas believes he's found a glimmer of hope in a new drug that allows him to control his dreams. Nicolas signs up for a dream trial that allows him to rebuild his life with his girlfriend, who died in an accident, through the use of lucid dreaming. With the intention of using it as grief therapy, Nicolas dreams night after night about the missing Daniela (Beatrice Grannò) and restarts an increasingly idyllic relationship, desperately clinging to the memory of his girlfriend. Thus, the protagonist finds himself immersed between two worlds, and the question is if he could choose, which of those worlds would Nicolas want to live in?Nacho Vigalondo (Colossal) directs British director Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) and Italian director Beatrice Grannó (season two of The White Lotus) in a story that combines science fiction with romance to explore love, loss, and overcoming grief. Premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and presented in the official section of the Sitges Film Festival that same year, achieving considerable success, Daniel Forever graphically depicts the gap between Nicolas's sad real world and the dream world in which Daniela continues to exist. Vigalondo shoots static shots in 4:3 and Betacan footage that create a suffocating, yet sad, atmosphere. On the contrary, the dreams in which he encounters his beloved are filled with bright and colorful frames, with wide-angle shots, creating a radiant atmosphere in a panoramic format, underscored by the skillful photography of cameraman Jon D. Domínguez. As well as a penetrating and powerful techno/disco score, along with other strange sounds by composer Hidrogenesse.This relatively inexpensive film was professionally written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, although I personally found it very long and somewhat tedious. Nacho was born in Cabezón de la Sal, Cantabria. His first film, "Crímenes del tiempo" (2007), which achieved great international success, has now become a cult movie, starring Karra Errejalde and Barbara Goenaga. He followed this up with a strange, mysterious, science-fiction comedy, "Extraterrestre" (2011), with Michelle Jenner and Julián Villagrán. Both appeared in his third film, "Open Window" (2014), as guest stars, starring Elijah Wood. He also directed a segment of the episodic film in the horror film "V/H/S Viral" (2014). He directed the Hollywood film Colossal (2016), starring big stars like Anne Hathaway. Nacho, who often appears briefly in his films, is a good young filmmaker, as well as a screenwriter and director of television films: "Just Before Christ," "Superstar," "The Neighbor," "In the Dark," "Stories to Stay Awake," and short films: "Sunday," "Crash," and "Tribute." "Daniela Forever" (2024) rating: 5. Acceptable and passable. Especially recommended for completists of Nacho Vigalondo's fruitful career and enthusiasts of twisted and complicated love stories with fantastical touches.

be careful what you wish for

After the sudden death of his lover Daniela, Nick experiments with a new drug that provides the user with the ability to control their own dreams. Nick not only dreams about Daniela, but strives to reshape the memories of her. This fantasy world that he inhabits clashes with reality, relatives, friends, and Nick's own psyche.I love the premise of Daniela Forever. It is interesting to think about and explore what we might do if given sway over dreams. Wondering if we could let go of control, deal with changes, and let others be as they are. I wish there was more depth to the dialogue and the scenes. While the setting for the film is Madrid, English is spoken much of the time. The director and main actors were present for this world premiere screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. "I'm going to cry a bit," said Nacho "the film is coming from a dark place." The film's soundtrack features the "coolest band in Spain."
