Plot summary

On a dark night, the Japanese police is raided by a spy. Different countries' intelligence agencies - such as England's MI6, Germany's BDN, and America's CIA - as well as the FBI's secret files are going to be taken, but public safety officers lead by Tooru Amuro arrive just in time. The spy steals a car and escapes. The spy and Amuro are then locked in a dead heat on the highway, and just as it is about to cause an accident with multiple cars, the spy's car is hit by FBI agent Shuichi Akai's rifle bullet and falls of the roadway. The next day, Conan and his friends go to a newly-remodeled aquarium in Tokyo. Under the main attraction, a Ferris wheel, Conan finds an attractive woman alone and injured. Her left and right eyes are different colors.

Double Lives and Shattered Memories-Conan Faces the Shadows Within

What if a single survivor of a deadly encounter held the key to both salvation and destruction, her fractured memories blurring the line between ally and enemy? The Movie thrusts the series into an intense confrontation with the Black Organization, amplifying the tension between identity, loyalty, and survival. The story begins when a mysterious woman with heterochromatic eyes is rescued after a violent chase, only to reveal fragments of knowledge tied to the Organization's secret operations. As Conan and his allies attempt to protect her, her unstable memories fuel a narrative where trust is fragile and betrayal lurks beneath every interaction. The escalating conflict culminates in large-scale set pieces, where the Organization's presence feels more menacing and direct than in many other films.Analytically, the film's strength lies in its darker tone and psychological undercurrents, using memory loss as a metaphor for fragmented identity and moral ambiguity. The interplay between the Organization and law enforcement adds urgency, while the protagonist's struggle to decipher truth from manipulation deepens the suspense. However, the film leans heavily on action sequences and spectacle, often sidelining the methodical deduction that defines Conan's core appeal. The emotional potential of the amnesiac character, though compelling, is underdeveloped, leaving the narrative thematically rich but narratively uneven.Rating: 6/10 - stylish, intense, and thematically bold, The Darkest Nightmare delivers high-stakes thrills and a menacing portrayal of the Black Organization, but its reliance on action over intricate mystery limits its overall impact.

Watch this first if you thought the Dimensional Sniper was horrible.

A thrilling vehicle chase opens the film, with Bourbon (Amuro Tooru) and Akai Shuichi pursuing a black organization member with incredible physical strength. After a protracted and intense pursuit along the highway, the BO member escapes. She stumbles down an alley, bleeding and dazed, only to collapse after screaming until she is completely blinded by a light show projected from the amusement park over the river.

The storyline is absurd. Although the films in this series have always been excellent, I feel like the caliber of the films has been steadily declining since The Quarter of Silence, the fifteenth installment. The Darkest Nightmare had an aspect that I found quite objectionable: it replaced unnecessary action scenes with excellent prose. Not because action is evil, mind you. Not at all. Action, when done right, can elevate a film to new heights. Here, it only serves to further degenerate the film.

I'm not fond of the movie's cast of characters, especially Bourbon, who seems to be closest friends with the Shonen Tantei. The character exhibits dubious behavior, and her final acts are judged as foolish. The BO characters, Sonoko, Agasa, Kogoro, and Ran, lack empathy and a kind heart. Although they make appearances in the film, the typical cast members Ran, Kogoro, Agasa, and Sonoko have little bearing on the story. They solely act as a visual cue that this is a Detective Conan movie since they are two-dimensional. I would much rather have them make no appearances in the film. Beneath their cracked exteriors, the BO characters lack empathy and a pure heart.
