Can coming-of-age stories break through mediocrity in the framework of traditional adventure?
The movie is ok.
I actually kinda like this movie, an interesting adventure is included, there's lots of fictional creatures not present in the first film (giant monster iguanas, sauropod-sized scorpions, etc), and even some likeable characters like Junior the Tarbosaurus himself, who somehow reminds me of young Simba from both the 1995 Lion King and its photo-realistic CGI remake of 2019 (both of which I liked). Though, I have two complaints about this movie. One of my problems with that movie is the cgi is often awkwardly unlike how the site for the movie likes to claim (the quote even states it is lifelike like Walking with Dinosaurs 2013 film, which I don't mind, but Speckles 2 movie does not even look close to being lifelike, in fact lots of dinosaurs look outdated, for example, the raptors have those broken pronated hands like all theropods in the movie, which none of them had, or still have in the case of birds, since birds are dinosaurs, and don't even have enough feathers (despite the claim of feathers not being scary, birds actually can be scary due to the fact that feathers can be soaked in blood and several birds like cassowaries can be dangerous), but I guess those inaccuracies are probably meant to familiarize the audience of what they are. My other problem is that Speckles is just too thick-headed for the entire movie scolding his son Junior for the entire movie for being scared even if Speckles was scared once like Junior when he was his age, sure he does see that he was wrong about his son at the end of the movie, but after all the mistakes he made and learned from the first movie, it feels like some but not all of that character has been forgotten just so he can be a stick in the mud about everything, making him almost as, it not as, neglectful towards his son as Buck Cluck from Chicken Little (the worst Disney character). My third and only problem is that Ankylosaur (Cy) has a grating voice (at least in the English dub) akin to nails on chalkboard, that Ankylosaur makes me so annoyed that I want to cook Ankylosaur meat (if Ankylosaurs were still alive today), I know the English-dubbing voice actor was trying to make the best for the movie, but that's the way the movie went. Besides from these nitpicks, I actually don't even mind the movie really bad, though not as good as the first movie, but it's worth watching.
