Underrated and Underappreciated

Herein lies one underrated Dracula flick held back by it's PG-13 rating and the sheer lack of the studio having faith in the film to dish out a sequel even after having a somewhat of a cliffhanger of an ending. The story of Dracula Untold takes the tried and true elements of Bran Stoker's Dracula and puts it all into a blender and mixes it on high and what you get is a cocktail of an interesting take on the character turns him into a hero of sorts. He's still the tragic fallen warrior that pretty much sells his soul to the devil but this time it isn't for the fact of losing a loved one but rather to save his people from becoming enslaved and dominated by a neighboring country. The lengths Vlad goes thru to save his kingdom is quite admirable even though it means dooming himself to an eternity of pain, suffering and despair. This version of Dracula is given a choice too. After encountering the master vampire and asking for his help to rid himself of the invaders of his land, the master vampire offers to loan Vlad his powers for 3 days and if he doesn't feed on any single human in 3 days time, the vampiric powers will vanish and Vlad shall be returned to his normal state. However, if he feeds on any single human within those 3 days he then condemns himself to an eternity of being a ravenous blood lusting fiend. It's a risk vs reward situation and I appreciated the creativity behind it. Now the movie isn't perfect. It suffers from wonky CGI effects and there are some questions that get raised as to the strengths and weaknesses and limitations of the powers at hand as well as the fact that the Turkish army is simply there as cannon fodder for the most part once Vlad gets his Dracula powers on. Although the final battle did get a tad interesting but only for about 30 seconds or so. There's a lot of potential in this movie to be something bigger that's for sure it's just a shame I don't think we will ever get to see it reach that potential as there's no sequel on the horizon over a decade later. But I digress, the acting is still pretty solid, it's a short burst 90 minute film and it pretty much feels like you're watching a live action Castlevania Lords of Shadow movie which I was all about. Overall, if you want a different take on Dracula, I can highly recommend this one for sure.

AN ACTION PACKED HORROR EXPERIENCE!

Is Dracula Untold the best vampire movie? No it's not. Should you watch it with the expectation of the original Dracula? No you shouldn't.However, the movie on its own is really exciting and interesting. I liked this movie a lot and found it to be very entertaining with a good balance of action but not being overly gory. Don't expect this to be like the classic chiller or you be very disappointed. I found it to have a good story line and really awesome action sequences. I recommend watching it, but just watch it for what it is and try not to compare, it's its own new story, not a carbon copy of the old story.

Smashing World Building

Did Dracula just peak ? Dracula isn't the greatest franchise, but this movie just maxes out every aspect about Dracula that could possibly get interesting. The tale of seafaring Odysseus who strands on a mysterious island, fights a one-eyed giant, and withstands the singing sirens tied to a mast, has been out for 2000 years. And someone goes: we need another movie about an Undead Bloodsucker. And absolutely smashes it. I love the theme of self-sacrifice (only second to Star Wars: Rogue One), the main actor, the stunning visuals with swarms of bats. When I watched the movie for the first time, I wasn't actually surprised how good it was. I was more surprised that I seemed to have missed a whole franchise. The producers made this movie like naturals. 'Of course, this would be a Dracula. Of course, this is what his existence would feel like. It just hasn't been shown, yet.' So that's the REAL Dracula. Awesome.
