A simple film, a profound reflection on love

This film is like a Swiss watch. All the mechanisms work in unison to create a perfect product: everything makes sense and is crafted down to the smallest detail. It is a powerful reflection on love that goes beyond a gay story to become a universal question. The central question is: how do we love? Is love a transaction, a give-and-take for personal gain? It is a simple question, yet one that is difficult to answer definitively. There is, however, a small dialogue between the protagonist and his father that perhaps suggests that to truly love someone means caring only for the other person's interests. Suzuki Ryohei's performance is superb, and the writing is beautiful. In the end, it is a simple film that delivers a very profound reflection.

It's "gay" but it's not...

Ignore the terrible title. Yes, it's a gay movie but then it's not. The "selfish" protagonist finds more than lust and truly and surprisingly finds himself as the movie ends. It's one of the best films I've seen in a while and deeply touched me. Great script and wonderful performances. The director might have used fewer close up, but that's a minor quibble. I rank it up there with 'Weekend." Too bad it's so little known. The ignorant review in the New York Times probably didn't help. No physical copies available in the US but it's available through Amazon. Again, highly recommended. A truly beautiful movie.
