good until last twenty minutes

Called "scarecrow" in netflix, it's espantaho in the film itself, and in imdb, which means...scarecrow! The whole family gathers for papa's funeral in the philippines, even the evil, first wife. And ravens. Wacky, horrible things start to happen during the pasiyam, the nine days of prayer for the deceased. Apparently, pablo died of cancer. But the really weird things start happening when the mean first wife arrived! They are having bad dreams. And attacks of locusts. And giant leeches. People go missing. Where did they go? We find out about halfway through. A whole lot of complicated explanation. And some of the mystery is revealed. Some silly horror movie tricks... bumps, loud screams, sudden jumps to other scenes. Some of the horrible things turn out to be just dreams. But not all of them! Some of the effects are pretty cheesy, but the story is pretty good. Up until the last twenty minutes. Sadly, the film takes a left turn and makes it more complicated than it needed to be. Added too much story, or something. Kind of out of the blue. It would have been so much better with a more simple ending. Ah well. Directed by chito roño.

Garbage

Espantaho bills itself as a supernatural horror film, but don't be fooled-the only terrifying thing about it is how much of your time it wastes. What should have been a chilling ghost story ends up being a tangled mess of melodrama, family feuds, and a painfully bloated script. It's more telenovela than terror.The film throws in everything: a cursed painting, inheritance drama, long-lost family members, bitter ex-wives, unresolved trauma, and a haunted mansion. But instead of weaving these into a gripping horror narrative, it drowns them in endless dialogue and over-the-top emotional confrontations. The scares are few and far between, and when they do show up, they're as predictable as they are toothless.Judy Ann Santos and Lorna Tolentino give solid performances, but even they can't salvage this script. There are entire subplots that go nowhere, characters introduced only to disappear without consequence, and supernatural elements that seem like afterthoughts. It's like the film couldn't decide what it wanted to be-so it tried to be everything at once and failed miserably.If you're looking for horror, look elsewhere. If you want to watch a family shout at each other for two hours with the occasional cheap jump scare, maybe Espantaho is your kind of movie. For me, it was just garbage.
