A Cinematic Catastrophe That Haunts Me Still

Rarely does a movie offend every sensibility I have-not through shock value or artistic boldness, but through sheer, soul-crushing incompetence. Watching this film felt less like entertainment and more like being trapped in a room with someone telling an unfunny joke for two hours, unsure if they were joking at all.To say the creators were confused would be an understatement. This movie has a severe identity crisis: is it trying to be a heartfelt drama? A quirky comedy? A tragic satire? The answer is yes-to all, and therefore none. Scenes meant to be emotional come off as laughable, while moments that might be comedic fall flat in a puddle of awkward silence. It's as if the writers picked themes out of a hat and just hoped it would all come together in editing. (It didn't.)

Devoid of comedy and romance...

Of course I was not familiar with the 2025 Filipino romantic comedy "Everything About My Wife" prior to stumbling upon it by random chance. And given my love of the Asian cinema, of course I opted to watch the movie. Sure, I didn't know what I was in for here, aside from it being a romantic comedy and the little information given by the movie's synopsis. So in a sense, I suppose, then writer Rona Co and director Real Florido had every opportunity to entertain me.The storyline in the movie sort of fell flat, as it was sluggishly paced, and it was a narrative that just didn't entertain me. Writer Rona Co failed to produce a script with events that would prove entertaining or funny, and the character gallery was sort of mediocre and one-dimensional.Despite of having watched a lot of Asian movies over the years, I have very little exposure to the Filipino cinema. And thus, I was not familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list in this movie, except for Carmi Martin. And that was actually something that spoke well in favor of the movie, as I do enjoy watching new and unfamiliar talents on the screen. The acting performances in the movie were good, despite the fact that the script was bland.I wanted to like the movie, but it fell short of entertain me. Yet, I managed to sit through the ordeal, hoping the pacing would pick up or that the narrative would become more interesting. Guess not, neither of those happened.My rating of director Real Florido's 2025 movie "Everything About My Wife" lands on a generous three out of ten stars.
