Hidden Gems

It's a real puzzle why films like Fast Charlie aren't made much anymore, or if they are, they're incredibly hard to find. This film hits a sweet spot with its well-executed action sequences and a storyline that, while familiar, is still engaging. Pierce Brosnan's performance as an aging hitman is awesome, and so different to what i've seen him do in the past. Bringing depth to a role that could easily have been one-dimensional.

The trend in cinema seems to have shifted towards blockbuster franchises or ultra-indie films, leaving little room for these kinds of mid-budget, character-driven action movies. They're not flashy enough to catch mainstream attention and not obscure enough to become cult hits. It's like you need to be a detective to hunt them down in the sea of content available today.

There's definitely a gap in the market for a streaming service dedicated to these hidden gems. Imagine a platform, maybe called "Hidden Gems," where you could find these underrated movies easily. It would be a treasure trove for film enthusiasts who crave the kind of solid storytelling and performances that "Fast Charlie" delivers but often gets lost in the shuffle of more prominent releases. A service like this could bring these overlooked films into the spotlight they deserve.

Very entertaining 90 minutes

Pierce Brosnan stars as a hitman in Mississippi who has a problem - he has let his dim bulb protege take care of eliminating one of his targets. I don't want to say more without spoiling something. The movie is fun, action-filled thriller with a few doses of black comedy. James Caan (in one of his last roles) stars as Brosnan's boss and Morena Baccarin stars as someone who helps Brosnan fix up what his protege has wrecked. Also stars Gbenga Akinnagbe as a rival boss who is particularly vicious and psychopathic. Directed by Phillip Noyce, the movie comes in at a breezy 90 minutes and makes no pretense of being an Oscar winner - it is an entertaining film and that's quite enough for me. 7/10.

Don't mess with an ex James Bond, he may be old but he's not a donut

Meet Charlie (Pierce Brosnan) a professional hitman/fixer, meet Charlie's new partner, Blade (Brenan Cook) who thinks it's a good idea to kill their target, Rolo by putting a bomb in a donut. When the bomb goes off it blows up Rolo's head so now no one can identify him apart from his ex wife, Maurice (Morena Baccarin) who points out that they both have matching tattoos on their bums.

During this part I kept laughing and thinking that this film was going to be more of a comedy that an action film where Charlie would keep running into disasters whilst trying to deliver Rolo's body to the man who wanted him dead, Beggar (Gbenga Akinnagbe.) But then the film took an unexpected but good action twist where after delivering the body, Beggar betrays Charlie and kills his boss, Stan (James Caan) and crew. Charlie then goes on a mission to take out all of Beggar's men. The action that follows isn't as intense as in some films and mostly involves Charlie taking out Beggar's men with just one shot. Although this does make him look very cool and professional and there is one part where he shoots two bad guys in the middle of a busy nightclub which gave me a little reminder of John Wick.

What doesn't make him look professional is his lucky escapes, although these do lead to some intense scenes. For example there's one scene where Charlie is out matched by Beggar's top hit man (Kevin Wayne) who nearly catches him hiding in a hotel laundry shoot.

I would have also liked to have seen some more hand to hand combat and/or car chases, but overall I enjoyed this film, I would happily watch it again and it's encouraged me to see what other action films Pierce Brosnan has been in besides James Bond.
