Plot summary

In 1973, martial arts great Bruce Lee died, his final film, Game of Death, left unfinished. With the public hungry for more Lee, movie execs decide to find a replacement. This outrageous satire looks at the entire process, from the oddball candidates to the greed and racial motivations that drive the final decision. There's big business in the movies, and Finishing the Game skewers it with an eye for '70s detail.

Who will be

Finishing the Game (2007) is a mockumentary movie co-written and directed by Justin Lin and it focuses on Bruce Lee's final movie Game of Death (1972), which was unfinished at the time of his death and studio executives launched a search for his replacement chronicled here through the eyes of five aspiring thespians who find out what the real game is. This movie was a first time watch for me and it was pretty average.Positives for Finishing the Game (2007): The premise is quite solid and there is a lot that can be explored in the story. The cast is really good with McCaleb Burnett, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Roger Fan, Sung Kang, Mousa Kraish, Meredith Scott Lynn and Dustin Nguyen. I like the old class look with the movie sets and cinematography that make it feel like a 1970s movie. The interviews with these characters are good and I liked hearing them talk about movies and Bruce Lee. And finally, the movie is really short and that is a good thing given what the plot of the movie is about.Negatives for Finishing the Game (2007): There isn't anything in the movie that feels like it never has a standout moment. I also felt that the comedy isn't really good and it feels outdated with a lot of the execution. And finally, this doesn't feel like a Justin Lin style movie and it could've been made by anyone else with little to no experience.Overall, Finishing the Game (2007) is a movie with an interesting premise on paper, but gets lost in the execution and a lack of Justin Lin's filmmaking style despite him being the director of the movie.

The follow through...

It was the worst of times: Bruce Lee had died under very mysterious circumstances and every movie studio in the world, it seemed, was dying to cash in on it. We the faithful found ourselves lining up for each and every two-bit knockoff that promised to unveil at long last the unseen footage from THE GAME OF DEATH. Frustrating? You bet your bippy it was. As bad as the charlatans were, the final straw turned out to be the "official" release of the footage itself: GAME OF DEATH has to be one of the cheesiest movies ever made. Bad enough that they used only a portion (12 minutes) of the missing footage (as John Little would later show, there was enough footage shot to comprise at least a full third of a feature length movie); the dummy (not "double") who postured his way through the rest of the movie seemed to have stepped straight out of one of the aforementioned knockoffs. Justin Lin and company have managed to capture the feel of the early '70s and there are some downright hilarious moments in FINISHING THE GAME. The bad news is that the "actual finished film" is even funnier- in a goofy sorta way.
