Local Horror Comedy with a Touch of Tradition and Friendship

Sekawan Limo is an Indonesian horror-comedy that skillfully blends suspense rooted in local mountain mythology with friendship-driven humor and strong cultural identity especially the East Javanese dialect. The film delivers many amusing and light moments while preserving a subtle creepiness, not relying heavily on jump scares or extreme gore. One of its major strengths is the setting: the climb up Mount Madyopuro under local myths, the warning not to look back, the requirement of even-numbered groups, and the significance of the 1 Suro night in Javanese tradition. These aspects create a brooding backdrop, giving a terrific foundation for building dark ambiance. The frequent use of East Javanese language, along with Indonesia subtitles, enhances authenticity and character depth. The cast interactions Bagas, Dyny, Juna, Lenni, Andrew feel genuine. There is camaraderie, curiosity, and fear, all developed through their relationships. The film also brings moral undercurrents: respecting tradition, facing one's past, and the cost of ignoring warnings all elements that add emotional weight beyond the comedic surface. However, the film is not without flaws. Some plot points feel familiar or predictable, especially when the mystery begins to unfold. Certain myth elements echo previous tropes seen in other local horror-comedy films. The pacing slows in parts, especially when giving emotional resolutions to characters, which may feel stretched. For viewers expecting heavy horror or radical structural twists, these parts might underwhelm. On balance, Sekawan Limo remains very enjoyable as light entertainment infused with strong local flavor. It delivers minimal horror tension plus plenty of laughs, and lingers in the mind not just for scares but for its messages about belief, friendship, and courage. That's why I give it 8/10.

"Better Than Expected - Light Horror with Heart"

I wasn't expecting much from Five Friends, but it turned out to be a surprisingly fun blend of comedy and horror. The chemistry between the group really works, and some of the jokes landed better than I thought they would-especially the playful banter and cultural nods. The idea that one of the friends might be a ghost adds a nice layer of tension without getting too heavy. That said, a few moments (like the podcast scenes) felt a bit awkward or unnecessary, and the pacing isn't always smooth. Still, it's a solid little genre mix that doesn't take itself too seriously and manages to entertain. It's not groundbreaking, but it's a good time. I enjoyed it more than I expected.

A fun, easygoing film with subjective humour

Directed by Bayu Skak, "Five Friends" (originally titled "Sekawan Limo") brings a fresh twist to the horror-comedy scene, highlighting Indonesia's distinctive storytelling style. One review even dubbed it: A Climbing Comedy Horror with Heartwarming Surprises. I have to say, this film does a great job of blending humour and horror, making for an enjoyable watch, though it might not have you on the edge of your seat. It's really aimed at the local crowd, while the rest of the world seems to lean more towards the desensitized versions of horror. This film doesn't dive into that territory at all. The story follows a group of five pals who head out for a weekend mountain hike, only to get caught up in some supernatural shenanigans."Sekawan Limo" translates to "four out of five" in Javanese. It's a fresh creation from YouTuber Bayu Skak, who directed this nearly two-hour comedy horror with most of the dialogue in Javanese. Thankfully, there were subtitles in theaters, so anyone who speaks Bahasa Indonesian could follow along without a hitch. The cast delivered solid performances, though nothing too remarkable."Five Friends" also touches on themes like friendship, loyalty, and confronting fears, which adds a nice depth to the otherwise light story. The ending wraps things up nicely, leaving viewers both entertained and toa degree, thoughtful. The non-linear storytelling in "Sekawan Limo" makes for a fun, easygoing film. Humour is subjective, but I found plenty of moments-especially those featuring Juna-to be quite amusing. That said, the podcast scenes didn't hit the mark for me in terms of laughs. Overall, I'd still call it a positive experience.
