Plot summary

Life on the Res

With all of the seemingly good selections of movies to choose from I chose "Frybread Face and Me" which is a coming of age movie about a young Navajo boy's stay on the reservation for a summer. Funnily enough, there was a movie from 1975 titled "Cornbread, Earl and Me" starring Laurence Fishburne. I couldn't help but think of the 1975 movie when seeing the title: "Frybread Face and Me." This movie is not like that one.Frybread Face (Charley Hogan) is the cousin of the main character, Benny (Keir Tallman). When Benny is forced to go to his grandmother's house on "the res" in Arizona, he and Frybread Face aka Dawn strike up a friendship. They are two undesirables staying on undesirable land with undesirable prospects, yet they find friendship, love, and family.Netflix.

LITTLE PLEASURES....!

A 2023 Netflix original produced by Taika Waititi. Following a young Native American tween, Keir Tallman, who is sent to stay w/his grandmom, Sarah H. Natani, for the summer since his parents are growing through the motions of a failed marriage. Falling into a drab routine as he finds he has some more roommates, his uncle & bronco rider in training, Martin Sensmeier, & cousin, Charley Hogan, the titular face (nicknamed so since her skin is supposedly greasy) as they navigate the summer in Natani's motorhome where the electricity is spotty & the entertainment is limited (their only viewing pleasure comes in the form of a well worn VHS copy of Starman) but learning how the other half lives (since he's from San Diego) he manages to change his life's speed to a slower pace & learn to appreciate the little things. Lightly paced w/a minimal run time (under 90 minutes) works wonders for the low key material w/the use of what I assume first or novice actors a plus.

Genuine and heartfelt

Although I am not Navajo Indian, I grew up right on the edge of the Rez. As a child, I never appreciated the beauty of the land and its people, only desiring to leave it behind. The sights and sounds of this movie actually gave me the gift of understanding how much my life was affected by the People and their way of life. It was powerful in its slow simplicity.

My graduating class in 1980 was 95% Dine' and only 45 of the 60 Seniors graduated. I wish I had been able to appreciate the honor I was given to live among - and visit with these beautiful people. I am proud that my brother married a Dine' and have four beautiful children whose Navajo mother and her family did their best to teach that serenity and culture to those youngsters.
