Plot summary

Tougher than Shaft and smoother than Superfly, this high-voltage sequel to Black Caesar explodes with enough action to incinerate New York City. Packed with machine-gun mayhem and riveting adventure, Hell Up in Harlem is nothing less than a modern-day tribute to the classic 30s gangster film. Fred Williamson is Tommy Gibbs, a fearless, bulletproof tough guy who blasts his way from the gutter to become the ultimate soul brother boss. Tommy steals a ledger with the name of every crooked cop and man in the city. Enlisting the aid of his father and an army of Harlem hoods, Gibbs goes from defense to offense, launching a deadly attack on his enemies that sets off a violent chain reaction from Harlem all the way to the Caribbean, climaxing in one of the hottest turf-war shoot-outs in Hollywood history.

I would consider this a must see for fans of Blaxploitation films

Hell up in Harlem (2013) is a movie I recently rewatched for the first time in a long time on Tubi. The storyline follows Tommy Gibbs recovering from gang warfare allowing his father to take over the streets on his behalf. When his best friend is mad he wasn't chosen to lead the gang he joins Gibbs biggest rival, the district attorney, to try and bring down Gibbs and his father. This movie is directed by Larry Cohen (Black Caesar) and stars Fred Williamson (Dusk till Dawn), Julius Harris (Live and Let Die), Gloria Hendry (Black Belt Jones), Margaret Avery (The Color Purple), D'Urville Martin (Dolemite) and Mindi Miller (Caged Fury). There are some magnificent action scenes in this. There's a rooftop shootout and fight sequence that is legendary. They do a good job of selecting unique locations for their fight scenes (hospitals, beaches, mafia members houses, etc). They also did a great job incorporating various weapons into the fights. The karate fighting girls in this are an A+.Overall, there's enough good action scenes in this to make it enjoyable despite an average primary plot. I would consider this a must see for fans of Blaxploitation films and score it a 6.5-7/10.

Pretty terrible but never dull

**DEFINITE SPOILERS** This film is a direct sequel to "Black Caeser". The first 7 minutes show the ending of the first film in which Caeser (Fred Williamson) was being chased and then beaten to death. This movie conveniently ignores that he was killed and has his father rescuing him. He survives and kills all the people that double-crossed him. He then tries to go legit...but his past won't stay away. **END SPOILERS**

The first movie was dull and stupid--it just had some violence and a good performance by Williamson to keep it going. This sequel was made quickly (it shows) and is REAL stupid--but it's never dull. The plot moves very fast and there's tons of violence and plenty of blood. All the violence is pretty funny--it's ineptly staged and obviously faked with some hilariously bad post dubbing. The acting is bad except for Williamson and this actually left room for another sequel (which thankfully never happened).

This is a pretty bad movie but I was never bored--all the action and violence kept me entertained. If you liked the first you'll probably like this. I give it a 5.
