Plot summary

The 1960s, Netherlands. Thomas doesn’t realise it yet, but he has special powers. The nine-year-old sees things others cannot. He lives in a strict, religious family where his father, quick to cite the word of God, often resorts to violence. As a sense of injustice grows within him and a longing for freedom takes hold, Thomas begins writing his Book on Everything. In it, he wishes for his father’s punishment and encounters a host of unusual characters: Jesus Christ, a levitating lady with a piano-loving cat, tropical fish swimming in city canals, a young peg-legged witch living next door, and many others.

Half-way!

I just finished watching "Het Boek Van Alle Dingen" (The Book of Everything), directed by Ineke Houtman, and honestly, I was pretty let down. The film, which is based on Guus Kuijer's book, had a chance to tackle serious topics like domestic violence, but it really missed the mark in several ways.First off, the choice to portray Jesus as a bearded woman felt more like a gimmick than a thoughtful artistic decision. It took away from the main story instead of adding any real insight into the protagonist's struggles. Plus, the way the film tried to address domestic violence for a younger audience lacked the depth and sensitivity that such a heavy topic needs. It seemed to lean on shock value and symbolism instead of offering a sincere look at the characters' experiences.Visually, there were a few standout moments, but they were pretty rare. The overall aesthetics often felt forced and didn't really contribute to the story or the development of the characters. While the film might have had good intentions, it ultimately fell short of delivering a powerful and authentic narrative that respects the seriousness of domestic violence.

Very good film adaptation of the book.

A beautiful and moving film! Have watched it because I've read the book. What I loved most is how it mixes the magic of childhood with some really deep and emotional moments about family, love, and courage. The performances were very good, especially from the young actor who plays Thomas. He brought so much innocence and curiosity to the role-it felt so real. The way the film balances lighter, funny moments with more serious, heart-wrenching ones was perfect. It made me laugh and cry, often in the same scene.Visually, it's also very nice. The way they brought Thomas's imagination to life with beautiful, dream-like visuals. It's one of those films that reminds you how powerful hope and kindness can be, even in tough situations. One of the things that stood out to me was how the film showed Amsterdam in the 1950s. It was so interesting to see how they captured the look and feel of the time. The sets, costumes, and little details from that era really made it feel like you were stepping back in time. From the way people dressed to the furniture and even the little everyday things, it was such a treat to dive into that world. The movie has a slower pace, but in a good way. It felt like watching an old-fashioned film.
