Reviewed after a first watch in 2025!

Post Splash and released in the same year as Beetlejuice (1988) we got High Spirits, apparently, as it's passed me by until today, but it seems to be a combination of the two except with an awful lot more PG 15 adult situations and a surprising amount of cursing.Peter O'Toole, Daryl Hannah, Liz Smith and a very young Liam Neeson put in the best performances, everyone else is also there, each scene seems to exist solely for showcasing another special effect, and there's far more water crashing around than one might anticipate in a castle/hotel setting.I could fathom a nostalgia fuelled cult following for this, but there's much too much ad libbing, prat falling and hammy over-acting to call it a lost classic, not to mention we seem to be missing a plot that makes any lick of sense, particularly that ending, but there's some fantastic looking sets, an awful lot of rather wonderful practical gags, many a marvellous model shot and plenty of good old fashioned optical effects, some of which had me reaching for the remote to try to figure out how they did that, and despite the somewhat disjointed feel it's surprisingly watchable, especially any time Peter graces the screen. Not sure about Connie Booth's American accent, but I guess it's only fair considering Daryl Hannah's Irish one.

Funny movie

This 1988 comedy about an Irish hotelier who decides to market his castle based on rumors that it's haunted is sadly underrated on IMDB. OK, it's a farce, which few Americans appreciate; and yes, there are some gags that don't work; and yes, Daryl Hannah turns in one of her lesser performances. But there are another dozen actors/actresses in the cast who are wonderful comedians, led by Peter O'Toole--who's as funny as he's ever been--and including Beverly D'Angelo, Steve Guttenberg, Jennifer Tilly, Peter Gallagher, Connie Booth, and Liam Neeson. I've watched it three times over the years, and every time I've thought it was funny. Worth a look.
