Not quite what I was expecting...

Right, well while I indeed never even had heard about this 2017 romantic comedy titled "Hire a Man" from director Desmond Elliot, I still opted to watch it as I had the opportunity here in 2025. I do believe in giving all movies a fair chance.Writers Temitope Bolade, Diche Enunwa and Chinneylove Eze put together a fair enough script, though I have to admit that it sort of fell a bit short of entertaining me. But I've seen far worse scripts and storylines in movies. "Hire a Man" is listed as a romantic comedy, but there wasn't really an ounce of comedy to be found throughout the course of the 101 minutes that the movie ran for. It was, however, more of a romantic drama.Given my limited exposure to the Nigerian cinema, then I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie. And that certainly wasn't a bad thing, because I do enjoy watching new and unfamiliar talents on the screen. The acting performances in the movie were fair.I am sure that there is an audience out there that will enjoy "Hire a Man" far more than I did. This is not a movie that I will return to watch a second time.My rating of director Desmond Elliot's 2017 movie "Hire a Man" lands on a generous four out of ten stars.

Sibling Rivalry and a Fake Romance

I guess it was my misfortune to watch Hire a Man right on the heels of Mrs. Right Guy--two unlikable heroines in a row, but at least I could tolerate Gugu after she got her comeuppance in Mrs. Right Guy. Our heroine in Hire a Man, Teshi Lawson played by Zynnell Zuh stayed annoying until the bitter end. Literally until the last scene she screamed at and insulted her love interest Jeff played by Enyinna Nwigwe.Hire a Man tells the story of unlucky in love Teshi who upon hearing that her younger sister is engaged, decides to hire a man to pose as her fiancé for an upcoming family retreat.Despite its flaws, Hire a Man had some redeeming qualities. The movie takes time to explain the complicated relationship between Teshi and her sister, played by Nancy Isime, who made the perfect mean girl. Another plus was that the lead actors looked great together and I would have enjoyed watching their characters fall in love. Unfortunately, Teshi and Jeff did not have one bonding scene where it was revealed they could--despite their fake relationship--actually embark on a real romance.Overall, Hire a Man revealed some insights into sibling rivalries and the scenery was pretty. However, the obnoxious and abrasive behavior of the heroine made it difficult to root for a happily ever after ending.
