Plot summary

This BBC documentary chronicles the life of folk/soft-rock singer John Denver through his rise with The Chad Mitchell Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary, his subsequent stardom, his popularity decline, and his tragic death at age 53.

Think what you like about the man.

You're free to think what you like about the man, but through all his innocence, he hit on something that resonates with me and many others. The earliest time I ever heard his music was during the Vietnam War. Country Roads was something all the people I knew wanted to hear over and over. That and Rocky Mountain High, for those of us from that part of the country, were a reminder of our home. The Colorado Rockies were my "country roads" and still are today. John was not from here, but he integrated readily. I have no problem with his music representing the way I feel about my home. One thing I have yet to do is visit Williams Lake, Colorado, during the annual Perseid meteor shower. I also want to see the fire in the sky.

A must for fans

I'd started to watch this thinking it would be a television program featuring John Denver in sort of a concert. What I got was an hour-long biography, and I'm glad I saw it.

Yes, it did feature a lot of Denver's music, but of course in segments interspersed with the voiceovers of the narrator and people from his live.

You get insight from Annie (of Annie's Song), his second wife, his younger brother, his son, his second wife, Jerry Weintraub (who managed him for many years ... and others.

You'll find out things about his early years you probably didn't know about, and sadly, also about his last years.

It's an interesting and moving story.
