Plot summary

Recorded from the West End, Kiss Me Kate follows a pair of divorced actors brought together to participate in a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew. Of course, the couple seem to act a great deal like the characters they play, and they must work together when mistaken identities get them mixed up with the mafia.

Miscast and Misdirected

Bart Sher has done stellar work directing golden age Broadway musicals at Lincoln Center: South Pacific and The King and I were mostly triumphant.Here he has come a cropper. This wonderful show has been reduced to a loud, overly emphatic mugging festival. There are some standout moments, but all in all it's dispiriting. Adrian Dunbar is game but oh so wrong for this role. He brings to mind the singing of Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia!, and that is not a good thing.Would that there were a pro shot of Michael Blakemore's Broadway revival in 1999.

Inert

I like Kiss Me Kate, but this version felt dramatically ineffective, somewhat miscast, and ultimately dull. The songs didn't feel like the goosebump-inducing thrills I know they can be. (I'm not old enough to have seen the original cast, but I saw the 1990s Broadway revival, which had some of the most spectacular choreography I'd seen in person).
