Plot summary

In 1910, 19-year-old Horace Robedaux, still bitter toward his stepfather, goes to Houston to be reunited with his mother, Corella, and his sister, Lily Dale, following a long estrangement. He has not seen either since he was 12 because his wicked stepfather, Pete Davenport (whom his mother married after his father drank himself to death) believes a boy ought to be self-reliant.

Financial dependency keeps a woman with a husband that loathes her son from a previous marriage.

I've seen this movie and liked it. Channing plays the part of a mother of two almost grown children, a daughter that is adored by her stepfather and a son that is loathed. The daughter living at home with the parents enjoys a comfortable life, while the son is only visiting the family. The young man is only welcomed by his mother. His sister is protective of her favorite child status, sides with her stepfather to make the visit uncomfortable and awkward. While visiting he becomes very ill. Instead of drawing compassion and help his illness only serves to bring even more of his stepfather's mistreatment. The young man leaves in the throws of a terrible fever knowing that he can never return, nor will he ever see his mother again.

Not bad but kinda boring

This isn't bad just doesn't really have much going on. Unfortunate with such talent. The mother remarries after her husband dies. She has 2 kids a son and a daughter. The son is kicked out at 12 years old by the new husband but the daughter, Lily Dale, stays with them. Lily Dale is a spoiled vain brat and way to immature for someone her age, even at that time. The son has had a hard life, getting kicked out of the house has a way of doing that to a kid. The jerk husband thinks a 12 year old should make his own way. The mother is stuck. In that day women had no say or free will.
