A Drizzle of Charm, a Shower of Melodrama

When love keeps showing up like afternoon rain, the heart has to decide whether to run for cover-or get soaked.Told across a wet-season tableau, Love in the Rain follows Nara, a schoolgirl infatuated with Daisy, a charming salon owner. At the same time, the ever-watchful Khung trails quietly in her orbit, and a "mysterious girl" complicates the triangle. The official summaries emphasize this rainy-season quartet, framing the film as a romantic comedy with whimsical edges. Behind the light tone lies a notable pedigree: actor-turned-director Worrawech Danuwong (Dan) writes and directs, with Sahamongkol Film among the producers/distributors, and a Thai theatrical release set for May 9, 2013.Analytically, the film's strengths lie in its atmospheric cohesion-rain as mood, motif, and emotional metronome-and in its music-forward design. The soundtrack was a marketing pillar, and the title song even picked up local recognition, which aligns with the movie's MV-like montage style in several passages. Yet this music-first approach also exposes narrative seams: pacing slackens as scenes rely on lyrics to evoke emotion, and character arcs (especially Khung's) can feel underdeveloped. Thai viewer commentary at the time noted a thin setup for the melancholy beats; the emotion is there, but the road to it is sometimes too quick.Still, there's cultural specificity and gentle humor in the everyday textures of salons, side streets, and seasonal showers, which keep the film watchable and occasionally tender. As a mood piece about adolescent longing, it's pleasant; as fully realized rom-com storytelling, it's middling.Rating: 6/10 - A soft, rain-kissed reverie with lovely music and uneven narrative lift.

That wasn't rain, it was tears of boredom...

I had the opportunity to sit down in 2022 to watch the 2013 Thai romantic comedy titled "Ruedoo thi chan ngao" (aka "Love in the Rain"). Now, I hadn't even heard about the movie prior to watching it, but of course with it being an Asian movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I opted to give it a chance.

And let me just say that for a romantic comedy then "Ruedoo thi chan ngao" was a massive swing and a miss. I managed to drag myself through a bit more than half of the movie, but it was a struggle to sit through the ordeal for that long. And by then I just had enough of the sheer boredom of a pointless story and characters with the appeal of wet cardboard, so I gave up.

The storyline in "Ruedoo thi chan ngao" was boring and mundane. The narrative was insanely slow paced, and that made for a very difficult movie to sit through.

I am sure that the cast in the movie were putting on fair enough performances, but since they literally had nothing worthwhile to work with in terms of a properly written storyline and script, nor anything even remotely resembling interesting characters, then the actors and actresses were just fighting an already lost uphill battle.

Director Dan Worrawech Danuwong most certainly failed to deliver a wholesome or entertaining movie with "Ruedoo thi chan ngao". And I can in all honesty say that this is not a movie that I will ever be returning to finish watching. Nor is it a movie that I would recommend you waste your time, money or effort on if you enjoy Asian romantic comedies.

My rating of "Ruedoo thi chan ngao" lands on a generous two out of ten stars.
