A movie about love, obsession, addiction and toxic relationships

The acting is really good. The chemistry between Kristen and Katy (beefy chick) felt very natural. Say what you will about Kristen in the Twilight movies, but she's got some serious acting chops. She did a banger job in this movie. Ed Harris's hair is crazy evil and his performance is up there with Kristen's. Dave Franco was funny, but I also hated his character. The movie has some unexpected dark humor at times, which was surprising given its dark and gritty look. There's some good use of sound design, there's a lot of squishy noises throughout the movie. The soundtrack is solid as well. The movie's got its own distinct style. Cinematography was pretty impressive. They made some really nice creative decisions with certain shots and the way they filmed certain scenes. This movie is equal parts intense, violent, unsettling and funny at times. I don't know what it is about A24 but they always seem to do weird things in the movies they release. Overall, the movie was fine with the exception of two moments where it turned really weird and of course both of those moments could be seen as metaphorical. This movie takes a downward spiral where things get pretty dark and out of control. In essence, this movie is about love, obsession, addiction, past trauma, toxic relationships and extremely flawed characters. Unfortunately there's not a single character with a redeeming quality by the end of the movie that you can cheer for or relate to, and this makes it hard to truly get invested in. The beginning part of the movie was the best. But once things start to spiral out of control, it becomes unsettling, intense and not the most pleasant of rides. Although I was glued to the screen while watching and it was entertaining, I don't think I'd watch this one again. I can recommend it though.

MAYBE A BIT OVERHEATED...?

Rose Glass' (Saint Maud) newest from earlier this year. A lesbian film noir (not many of those...Bound anyone?) starring Kristen Stewart & Katy M. O'Brian where we find competing bodybuilder O'Brian entering Stewart's orbit, she works for her dad, Oscar nominee Ed Harris, at his gym where she's a Jacqueline-of-all-trades. Not being satisfied w/the women who come her way even though she has one admirer, Anna Baryshnikov (Mikhail's daughter), who'll do just about anything for her, meeting O'Brian seems to be the balm to her salve & they hit it off like gangbusters even though Stewart warns her about her berth at Harris' gun range/bar may lead to problems but why worry about that since Stewart proceeds to provide O'Brian w/steroids which she soon abuses so when she hears that Stewart's brother-in-law, Dave Franco, has put her wife, Jena Malone, into the hospital after a beating, O'Brian takes the law into her own hands killing him. Discovering the body soon puts Stewart into panic mode as the body & murder site must be cleansed & disposed of while some Feds are sniffing around to nab Harris (insinuating Harris may've killed Stewart's mother years before) & has been using a crevasse in the desert to dispose of his enemies. W/the tension mounting as well as the bodies, will the star-crossed lovers eventually find love over the rainbow or die trying? What to make of this phantasmagoria of excess is the question of the day as it will definitely not be for everyone w/its scenes of outre (O'Brian literally hulks out when she gets angry) & violence are welcomed by a lust struck Stewart who pretty much charts her own disastrous course of events which if a sequel comes down the pike, it won't be pretty.

Promising neo-noir with godawful ending

Two women in late 1980's New Mexico (the film is set around the time the Berlin Wall came down) who are both really good at making bad decisions hook up and create a trail of bloody chaos in this oddball, original crime caper about lesbian lust and bodybuilding fetish. The film, shot in New Mexico, looks great and the cast is stellar (particularly and predictably, Kristen Stewart and Ed Harris crush it.) The last 5 minutes unfortunately take a non-sensical twist which you'll either find metaphorical and brilliant or will almost ruin the previous 90 minutes for you. I absolutely hate the cop out ending but it does have a dark humored coda. Mostly recommended, but I hope this is the last movie I ever see about lesbian bodybuilders doing steroids and turning into the Hulk (pretty much literally how this ended.)
