Surprisingly, good and artistic

Lurker is a sharp, unsettling thriller that caught me off guard in the best way. It's creative, tense, and surprisingly fun for a film that dives deep into obsession and manipulation. The story follows Matthew, a fan of rising musical artist Oliver, who hides his true identity in order to infiltrate Oliver's inner circle. What begins as admiration quickly twists into obsession, and soon Matthew's actions - from the things he sets up to the secrets he uncovers - threaten to destroy Oliver's career and personal life. The real hook, though, is that Matthew isn't just unhinged - he's intelligent, even brilliant at times, and that makes him all the more dangerous. The marketing materials, with their imagery and tone, might make some think this is an LGBT-centered film. In truth, while there are homoerotic undertones and subtle hints of attraction woven into the story, that's not the film's core. At its heart, Lurker is about power, obsession, and how blurred the line between admiration and destruction can become. The director deserves real credit for crafting an atmosphere that feels both intimate and suffocating, though I did find the use of video-camera-style footage a little distracting at times. It doesn't take away from the story, but it's definitely something you'll notice when watching.Performance-wise, Theodore Pellerin is the standout. As Matthew, he's magnetic - manipulative, vulnerable, and chillingly unpredictable. I wasn't overly familiar with his work before, but his performance here cements him as someone to watch. Opposite him, Archie Madekwe shines as Oliver, the unsuspecting artist caught in Matthew's web. Together, their dynamic carries the entire film, with the rest of the cast serving more as background noise than essential players.Overall, Lurker is a strong, engaging thriller with great performances and a storyline that keeps you hooked until the very end. I'd definitely recommend it - and yes, I'd rewatch it.

A Brilliant Character Study of Loneliness and Desperation

When shades of the series Entourage meld with Killing Eve and Saltburn to create a slow burn, low-key erotic thriller and character study. This may be the feature debut for Alex Russell (a writer on series The Bear and Beef), but his cast ensemble and production team have had plenty of set time (his AC worked on Avatar). In a non-linear visual narrative with a straight-through character study of a young, lonely, LA wanna-be named Matthew, played with remarkable skill by Théodore Pellerin, a well-crafted manipulative mask of innocence compels the story. Matthew's lurker love interest is Oliver, a young British singer whose star is on the rise, played by Archie Madekwe who effortlessly does all his own soulful vocals. Madekwe's adept enigmatic presence is no less than it was in Midsommer or Saltburn - it's just a different shape.Russell admittedly knows the LA music scene - with its determined strivers, affable hangers-on, and adulating desperados in a frenzied orbit around a carefully curated alpha. Everyone in Oliver's entourage wants to benefit from his success, but no one worriedly wants it more than Matthew. Social class disparities in Oliver's beehive are not an issue, but they are for Matthew, which affords him the despair he needs for a disturbing character arc.DP Pat Scola (Pig, Sing Sing, and A Quiet Place: Day One) offers colorful visuals that move with vitality aided by video interludes, and the overall aesthetics are boosted by Kenny Beats' lively synth score. While many films would serve up a suitable karma for a deviant lurker, Russell didn't want an obvious resolution, relying instead to explore how the barriers to obsessive fandom can be breached with cunning and a monstrous fear of alienation as a first driver.

Solid narrative with good character development!

The film is solid. Beautiful shots of Los Angeles, clean script that doesn't over explain and creates an intriguing narrative without relying heavily on dialogue. The actors were all fantastic and it has a rawness to it. The character development takes its time and the lead is fleshed out well. There was a lot of tension in this film and it was unpredictable which made for a strong viewing. I loved it. However, this is a film that requires patience and some people might find sitting through it laborious. The music was great! I'm not sure if it's more than a one time watch but well worth seeing!
