Familar plot, good acting by Rajkummar Rao

This is a familiar story of an oppressed man turning into a gangster when driven to a corner and there are many movies based on similar plots. Actor Rajkummar Rao plays a gangster boss which is a change of image for him and he has given a fine performance. As his wife Manushi Chhillar also impresses. In a supporting role Saurab Shukla is as good as usual.Director Pulkit has packed in enough excitement with plenty of action and fight scenes. He has also handled the emotional scenes well too. The plot is predictable and moves in the stereotyped pattern as in such narratives. The atmosphere is of hinterland in India and most of the action takes place at night in the villages and rural areas. Plenty of shootings and explosions take place to keep you engaged. The narrative rides on the actions of Deepak turned self styled Maalik as Rajkummar shoots his way through if he is not bashing them. His plan to surrender goes wrong due to circumstances. There are holes in the plot but no point raising questions. What matters is that there is sufficient entertainment to keep audience engaged. And there is the essential item number by Huma Qureshi to spice up things.

Out of 5, 4 for Rajkumar Rao and 1 for everything else

Rajkumar Rao may have accepted this movie just to break away from his boy next door image but it has backfired. He has been spot on with his earnest performance but everything else let the project down. Secondly, Rao does not have that Sunny Deol like persona for such roles, therefore, makers could have tried to present his character in a quite, calm & chilling way than a loud & shouting anti hero. Huma Qureshi is certainly not an item song material and makers could have opted for Dino Moreo rather than Manushi Chhillar. All Disappointment, except Rao.

Good performance, cliché story

Starring Rajkumar Rao, Maalik is a gangster drama revolving around the character Deepak and his rise to become the fearless.To start with, the story is nothing new and doesn't reinvent anything. A poor and angry young man, rising against the odds, to reach to the top - a cliché story that we have seen over the years in bollywood. The highlight of the movie is Rajkumar Rao's performance as Deepak urf Maalik. He is convincing in his act, while Prosenjit came as a surprise package.Apart from few performances, the movie had nothing to offer. A weak story, underdeveloped characters and an ending that was predictable. The songs as always, were unnecessary and irrelevant to the whole story. Manushi Chillar is a forgettable act.Overall, Maalik is a fine film that might get attraction only due to the main lead's performance. However, the gangster drama is affected by predictable plot and formulaic climax. My take to watch this movie is 50-50..!!My Rating : 3/5.
