"We're together and that what counts"

Aces Go Places 4 (or Mad Mission 4 or Best Partners 4) takes place in Hong Kong and New Zealand concerns a crystal prism with power to make a person into a superhuman, and the usual AGP protagonists King Kong and Albert Au get involved with said prism leading to Albert's wife and son being abducted by the villain called 'The Boss'. It has some good set pieces and the end is entertainingly explosive. There is a lot of silly comedy (the ice hockey match in particular) which is a matter of taste but not to mine. The cast includes Ronald Lacey strangely reprising his 'Raiders Of The Lost Ark' character and there are also nice cameos from Tak-Hing Kwan and Kien Shih. The rest of the cast perform gamely but are outshone by Cyrus Wong as Baldy Jnr.

The oddest mission so far

The fourth chapter of the "Mad Mission" / "Aces Go Places" series is a somewhat odd mix of the slapstick tone of the previous entries with some violent and unpleasant moments. The result has enough chases, stunts and bumps to be recognized as a part of the series, but it still feels somewhat alien to it. The script is (as usual) weak, and for all-around action fans I'd say "Part 2" remains the best choice, but for martial arts fans this may be the most satisfying entry yet - there are more fight scenes than before and Sam Hui is surprisingly credible in them. The best thing in the movie, however, is the addition of the wonderful Sally Yeh, in a semi-action role. (**1/2)
