Plot summary

Friends Jenna and Tarra are on their way to a cheerleading contest when they decide to stop at a gas station to help two guys, Oliver and Chad, who are experiencing some engine problems. What they don't know is that they are being watched by a group of deranged madman whose only intention is to hunt them down and kill them for pleasure. After being captured and locked up, survival is the only thing on the friends' minds, but just how far are they willing to go?

"Wrong Turn" and "The Hills Have Eyes" on a shoestring budget...

While I had indeed never even heard about this 2010 Swedish horror movie, from writers and directors Sonny Laguna, David Liljeblad and Tommy Wiklund, as I stumbled upon it by random chance here in 2025, I still opted to watch it solely because I love all things horror.Writers Sonny Laguna, David Liljeblad and Tommy Wiklund put together a pretty straightforward script, which didn't really challenge the intellect of the audience in any discernable way. The movie felt like a rip-off of movies such as "The Hills Have Eyes" and "Wrong Turn", so you're not in for anything groundbreaking here. It wasn't as if writers Sonny Laguna, David Liljeblad and Tommy Wiklund were inventing something new and innovative with this 2010 horror movie. But hey, if you like movies with deranged and deformed redneck killers living deep in the woods, then you might get a kick out of watching "Madness".I was actually not familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list, and that actually turned out to be in favor of the movie. Yeah, I do enjoy watching new and unfamiliar talents on the screen when I watch a movie. The acting performances in the movie were fair.There was a sense of low budget and home-made movie project the permeated throughout the movie. Sure, it wasn't exactly as it was cheap and amateurish, but it just wasn't feeling or looking like a top-of-the-line over-the-top budget project.Watchable, for sure, but I was only mildly entertained, as the narrative sort of just ran around in circles without much progression to the story arch. However, it is not a movie that warrants more than a single viewing. Nor is it a movie that I would recommend horror fans to run out and track down.My rating of writers and directors Sonny Laguna, David Liljeblad and Tommy Wiklund's 2010 movie "Madness" lands on a generous four out of ten stars.

Brutality on a shoestring

Madness plays like a student-made homage to Texas Chainsaw Massacre / Hills Have Eyes etc. The acting is so terrible it is unintentionally hilarious, as I doubt any of the cast have any acting skill / experience whatsoever. The plot is basically non-existent and much of the characters actions make no sense at all. The strange thing is that it features Swedish actors playing American characters, who are travelling across backwoods USA, but it is actually filmed on location in Sweden. And the 'bad guys' talk in Swedish whilst the 'good guys' all talk in English with heavy Swedish accents. Rather bizarre. The violence is pretty brutal and senseless, with some rather effective gore effects (given the shoestring budget), although the violence becomes rather stale, generic and uncreative, with no stand-out set-pieces. The film does have a kind of lo-fi charm, and probably would have been more entertaining had the film-makers acknowledged this by making the movie more 'tongue-in-cheek' rather than the stark and serious tone they have tried to set. The one redeeming factor is that the whole thing (including writing / directing / shooting / editing / effects) was all carried out by a team of three guys, quite an admirable effort.Also, it's rather hard to hate on a movie that keeps it's two female lead characters in cheerleader outfits the whole time.
