Clever, great and multilayered Comedy! A joy to watch

Howard Hawks shoots a comedy and what a comedy: He breaks with the macho man image, the daredevil and hero that we know from his westerns, and on the one hand breaks the role image of the man and instead shows as a counterpart and love interrest a macho woman who asserts herself in the world of men. With Rock Hudson brilliantly cast against his womanizer and action hero roles, Rock Hudson dares to play against his image and masters this magnificently, thanks to the great, excellently timed script and editing, the entire cast and of course his acting. Rock Hudson comes across as much more layered, sympathetic and vulnerable in this film than in other roles and it is a joy to watch him.As a counterpart Paula Prentiss, who is great at standing up to men, has great scenes thanks to the script, but is very unlikeable to me in the beginning from the role. A strong female role that is superficially characterized by arrogance and insolence, but gains more and more facets as it progresses. The script cleverly plays with gender roles and it is simply fun to watch this film. Fine humor meets slapstick interludes and humanity.Great casting right down to the supporting roles.A beautiful, great film that I can recommend to everyone.

pretty good comedy from Hawks

Rock Hudson stars as a man posing as a fishing expert who basically passes on information from one customer to another. He has written a best selling book on fishing and no one knows he's a fraud, not even his fiancée. He is shocked to learn his boss has entered him into a fishing contest and doesn't know what to do until Paula Prentiss and Maria Perschy tell him they got him involved and are going to teach him to fish. This is a pretty good comedy but it does have a little too much slapstick in it. There are some scenes that are taken from Bringing Up Baby and Howard Hawks did ask Cary Grant to be in this movie but he said no because he didn't want to be seen on screen with women who a lot younger then he was. The movie is two hours long and goes by pretty quickly.
