This Korean found-footage horror follows a documentary crew investigating a mysterious murder.
Much like Japanese director Koji Shiraishi's engaging mockumentaries, Marui Video begins as a true-crime documentary before plunging into the paranormal realm. It's more polished than you might expect, with a lot of expository info dumping that might be hard to follow if you're not closely paying attention. Later on, it becomes something similar to Incantation or The Medium, introducing shamanism into the story but slowly losing its feet toward the conclusion. It does pick up a bit near the climax, but the place where it ends up is slightly more underwhelming than what preceded it.
Unlike Shiraishi's films, this one somehow feels too polished and fabricated. It doesn't leave a lasting impression even if it does manage to present a few pretty creepy moments. It's still a bit better than that average 5.0 suggests, and I think some found-footage enthusiasts will find it worthwhile.

Plot summary
The video evidence of the murder, which is especially brutal and graphic, that shouldn't be released to the public; a reporter who has access to the prosecutor's office hears about a cursed tape in the video archive and begins reporting on it.

Average, sporadically intriguing mockumentary
The motive behind those possessions...
The ghost/vengeful spirit of Cho Kyung-could have killed his crazy father & took his revenge without possessing some random individuals, then committing some random crime. Particularly, the killing in Dongsungjang Inn was unnecessary, as the spirit was able to travel to the Inn, he could have possessed anyone to haunt & kill Byung-sun on any day as he owned the Inn and was hiding on the top floor for quite some time. That ghost was intentionally seeking media attention, I guess.
Overall, MARUI got a decent budget & fine production value; I just expected it to be a lot more creepier as an Asian found footage horror. There aren't much quality FF flicks out there from Asia actually. I've seen very few so far; i.e. NOROI, INCANTATION, OCCULT, A RECORD OF SWEET MURDER and THE MEDIUM.
Ending was a disappointment
A South Korean found footage/mockumentary horror film that is well made (only the first act) with all the ingredients to create something eerie and atmospheric. I enjoyed all the countryside locations and the occasional creepy, shocking and disturbing moments.
The ending was a letdown and an unsatisfying conclusion. Such a shame it had so much potential.
