Bringing Darkness to Life

Medieval Times: The Making of 'Army of Darkness' (2015) *** 1/2 (out of 4) This 96-minute documentary on the making of ARMY OF DARKNESS features over twenty cast and crew members as they discuss every aspect of the production. Obviously Bruce Campbell gets the majority of the screen time as he discusses how what we saw in ARMY OF DARKNESS was originally going to be in EVIL DEAD 2 but the budget wouldn't allow it. From here we talk about the casting, the shooting, the special effects and of course the various versions of the movie that are out there. If you're a fan of the series then you'll certainly love this documentary as the cast and crew pretty much hit on everything you'd want to know. Director Sam Raimi isn't on hand but that doesn't take away too much considering there are quite a few other extras out there that he has been involved with. The highlights of this documentary all come towards the end when we get into the various issues the film had including getting stuck on a shelf for over a year and the fact that Raimi was shooting for a PG-13 rating only to get slapped with a NC-17.

Entertaining and informative...

Given my love of the 1992 classic "Army of Darkness", of course I needed no persuasion to sit down and watch this documentary. Actually I didn't even know that it existed before not in 2025, as I stumbled upon it by random chance. The documentary shows a lot of great behind the scenes footage and showcases a lot of interesting and fun facts about the making of the movie. I have to say that this documentary was quite a blast to sit through. And if you enjoy the 1992 movie, then you definitely will also enjoy this 2015 documentary. There are some great and insightful interviews with cast and crew alike.I was surprised to see Bill Moseley and Patricia Tallman were actually in the movie. I never did know that before now in 2025, seeing this documentary for the first time.I can warmly recommend you to spend 96 minutes on this documentary. My rating of "Medieval Times: The Making of Army of Darkness" lands on a seven out of ten stars.

Medieval Times The Making of 'Army of Darkness': Excellent documentary about a flawless film

Everytime the sky turns teal, it rains skittles, Justin Bieber releases a decent song and Donald Trump tweets something that doesn't resemble something a 3rd grader would come out with I give a film a 10. It's rarity and something I celebrate!Back in 1992 such a film was released and its name was Army Of Darkness, it was the film that truly put Campbell up on a pedestal in my eyes. This feature length making of documentary tells the story of its creation, sfx, casting, bloopers, deleted scenes, battle with the censors and reception. Generally ticking all the usual categories these things usually follow, but here it does it with style and was very watchable.Heavily featuring the man himself Bruce Campbell, the rest of the cast and production staff Medieval Times has some excellent interviews many of which are very non-PG and don't hold back at all.I found the insight into the films creation fascinating and even learned a few bits I didn't already know (And that's rare in itself). As of time of writing Ash vs The Evil Dead (2015) has just been cancelled after 3 series sealing the fate of Ash Williams once and for all and that breaks my heart. 3 movies and 3 seasons, I don't think he did bad for himself at all.An excellent documentary and essential viewing for fans of the franchise, Raimi and Campbell. The Good:Great interviewsVery well madeNo punches pulled interviewsThe Bad:No Embeth DavidtzCould have been a tad longerThings I Learnt From This Movie:Bruce Campbell has transcend to god like statusI'm in the 1% of people who actually prefers the amended finale
