Plot summary

A character study of, “the funniest comedian you’ve never heard of,” and an exploration of how we define artistic success, MENTALLY AL follows Al Lubel, a former Star Search grand champion as he struggles to get by, perpetually broke and sleeping on friends couches, as he continues to pursue his artistic dreams into his sixties.

Meditation on the Nature of Success

This guy is funny and you will laugh but also experience the kind of danger his attitudes are causing. His standup is a penetrating look at his psyche. If you are aware of artists with mother problems this guy takes the cake. He openly wonders if it is fear of success or the courage to be themselves. He's homeless lest for the help of pals. He sleeps most of the day and doesn't seem to connect it to depression. He's sort of like Albert Brooks meets so called alternative comedy. Al points out he's avoided the law career he was once working towards.
