Plot summary

Young businesswoman Elyse Samford's life takes a turn when she inherits Samford Candy, a multi-billion dollar corporation, from her retired father. A trademark infringement lawsuit against a rival company brings Elyse to Higgins Attorneys and Sons, where Rob Carelli, a young, too-nice-for-his-own-good lawyer, is bullied by his boss, firm founder Carter Higgins, and his two arrogant sons. Despite his workplace woes, Rob becomes instantly smitten with Elyse. With Halloween just around the corner, Elyse invites the Higgins law firm staff to an opulent masked Halloween costume ball. Rob obeys an order to remain in the office working that night, but has a change of heart when his spunky, 12-year old niece Ruby, convinces him to attend the ball wearing a prince costume. After a magnificent waltz and magical exchange with the handsome "prince," Elyse yearns to locate this mysterious man and hopefully find the romance her life has been missing.

Of course it's a Cinderella story

Blatant attempt to imitate the Cinderella story complete with a ball, a midnight deadline and a princess (CEO) rather than a prince. The gender roles are reversed also for Rob, the oppressed servant of the Boss man lawyer and his two sons.

Some of the humor and tone borders on the childish, especially Rob's three superiors at the office. Their highhandedness is purely cliche. The two romantic leads fall in love over a single evening which is quick even for Hallmark. Rob has a niece, Ruby, with no apparent matching role in the Cinderella story.

This story shortcuts the quest with the slipper and jumps right to a new twist in the story where Emmett slips into the role of the mystery person from the Ball. Things quickly turn even farther from the original Cinderella which freshens up the rest of the story. There's a bit of a detective mystery mixed in with the romance.

Ruby guilts Rob into something stupid. Doing the right thing IS the right thing, but ironically one of the frequent lines of the movie is the rule to follow here. Dot the i's and cross the t's first. You can't make accusations like this without evidence. And it gets even crazier.

Altogether this movie has several earmarks of a movie aimed at children and families. If looked at from that viewpoint, it's a decent movie and fun.

Great watch

I liked this movie, yet not enough to give it a 4 or a 5 star. I liked the relationship between the father and daughter best. Their easy going relationship and their love and respect for each other. The father decided to retire and leave his very successful candy business to his daughter. In a way this movie was like a Cinderella story, yet it wasn't the female who had the wicked sisters. It was the male lead who worked as a lawyer for a law firm. He was a nice-Cinderella type who did all the work for the boss's two sons (also lawyers in their Daddy's firm) and never got the credit for what he did. The male lead also was there for his single Mom sister and her daughter. He was a bowling buddy with his niece and the female lead also liked to bowl (with her Dad). At the beginning of the movie these lead characters first meet at the bowling alley and later at the law firm. The "sparks" fly when he shows up to the masquerade ball as a prince (thanks to the seamstress skills of his sister) and she is the princess and they do make a beautiful couple. He loses his crown when he leaves the ball before midnight and she finds it. Thus begins the search for her Prince Charming.... James Welch Henderson, Arkansas 2/18/2021

Very Enjoyable

In this reversal of the traditional Cinderella story, Rob Carelli (Christopher Russell) is a Pittsburgh attorney who gets all the work and none of the credit in his firm, run by a father and his two arrogant, bully sons. Rob falls for the head of a client firm, Elyse Samford (Autumn Reeser), but is too reserved to do anything about it.

Russell has that Christopher Reeves-as-Clark-Kent vibe going: ruggedly handsome, but socially awkward, and hiding his true feelings. When he wears a mask, you have to accept that no one could possibly identify him.

This Hallmark romance is one of the better ones. The chemistry between the two leads is strong, and both are very likable. Over and over again, Rob proves himself to be a caring, principled man. The meaty role of his niece Ruby is played by Helen Colliander. And Neil Crone plays the part of Sam, the over-qualified and somewhat cynical office security man Rob befriends.
