Marvelous satire of religion and its followers - how the message is distorted, how factions invariably form and fight one another, and how blind worship quickly replaces reason (and even kindness). After the Sermon on the Mount is delivered to a crowd who mostly can't hear Jesus and squabble among themselves, one guy walks off commenting "What Jesus fails to appreciate is that it's the meek who are the problem," in shades of the conservative view in 1979 and today. Mostly it's just good, sacrilegious fun, sometimes venturing into territory that's now frowned upon (like making fun of a speech impediment), but overall very creative and intelligent. Here's another funny bit:
Brian: Look, you've got it all wrong! You don't need to follow me! You don't need to follow anybody! You've got to think for yourselves! You're all individuals!
Crowd, as one: Yes! We're all individuals!
Brian: You're all different!
Crowd, as one: Yes, we're all different!

Plot summary
Brian Cohen is an average young Jewish man, but through a series of ridiculous events, he gains a reputation as the Messiah. When he's not dodging his followers or being scolded by his shrill mother, the hapless Brian has to contend with the pompous Pontius Pilate and acronym-obsessed members of a separatist movement. Rife with Monty Python's signature absurdity, the tale finds Brian's life paralleling Biblical lore, albeit with many more laughs.

Razor sharp, and still holds up
Eternal comedy genius.
Brian is born in a stable, wise men turn out to shower hin with gifts, unfortunately it's the wrong stable, Brian goes through life mistaken for The Messiah.....only he's a very naughty boy.
One of my favourite films of all time, it ever I'm stressed, or in a bad mood, this is the tonic, it makes me laugh from start to finish, it's hilarious.
I can only imagine the furore this caused when it was released, even now some people recoil at its name.
I honestly cannot say I find this film offensive, by that I can't see a single scene where it mocks Jesus Christ, it does however delight in mocking men, and their idiotic ways.
Such a small cast, but so many characters, and some big characters, Terry Jones gets me every time, Mandy is perhaps my favourite character, and that voice is hilarious.
It's loaded with incredibly funny one liners, slapstick and some very intelligent and clever humour, everything is purposeful, not a single scene is wasted. 'He's not the Messiah ...' was my text alert for a while, such is my love for this film.
10/10.
