Could have been so much better

_Murder in Pacot_ has Alex Descas and an interesting premise -- how Haitians coped in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes in 2010. Middle class guy (Descas) and his wife (German actress Ayo, whose character is not named either) are literally digging themselves out of the rubble. To make ends meet they rent the intact half of their house to a foreign aid worker Alex and his life-in-girlfriend Andemise. Domestic tension ensues. The screenplay by director Raoul Peck and cowriters Pascal Bonitzer and Lyonel Trouillot has the flavor of an archeology dig too; many key plot points, hidden bodies, and buried BMWs, are only slowly revealed. The crumbling house, still cracking in the aftershocks, is an obvious metaphor for the country, and the shocking wealth of the couple in a dirt-poor nation is only slowly revealed.Andremise even scolds them for it -- by comparison the poor have not lost so much in the earthquake. The aid worker (who is Caucasian), with his laptops and big words, is the target of much of the bile too. But poor Andremise does not come off as a heroine either; she goes clubbing every night. Descas and Ayo's couple are however the main villains in this film devoid of rooting interest. It is interesting to see Descas in an unusual role, but screenplay could have been leveraged into a mythical tragi- comedic farce if played right. Instead every scene is like Tennessee Williams.Haitian actress Lovely Kermonde Fifi distinguishes herself as Andremise.Given Haiti's non-existent film industry, she has only one more film credit afterwards. Peck also grew up in Haiti, and has an impressive directorial resume working in France, but gets the tone of this one all wrong.

Good

It's refreshing to see Alex Descas in a leading role or in anything else for that matter. The story is quite understated but still engaging and the characters in general work well together. Although it felt kinda long, it wasn't painful. I thought the ending was a little bit odd and seemed quite unnecessary - I suppose I didn't really understand it and there didn't seem to be any real associated clues along the way to warrant such an ending. Anyhow, not a bad film.
