The venerable obsession with fame

No. I have been eating Sushi since 1979. While Nobu is clearly a very talented chef in this cuisine, the whole enterprise is overgrown into a massive ego journey by everyone involved. DiNero is cultivating a Big Business, an enterprise obsession that has nothing to do with the cuisine. The same approach could be applied to peanut butter. I have eaten sushi that costs 25 dollars for all you can eat and sushi that cost more than a thousand dollars for one meal. My most beloved sushi place was a very tiny, 2 tables and 2 seats at the counter. The gnarly old timer who ran Samurai Sushi in the West Village, just off Blecker. I loved that guy. I spent about two thousand dollars a month there for a while. His sushi was not so exotic and creative as Nobu sushi, but it was magnificent anyway. Sushi is not a cuisine best served by corporate development and 500 seat restaurants. I found Nobu to be narcissistic to a strange degree. Yes, he seems like a lovely man. But celebrities like DiNero, I wonder what their thinking is. Nobu sushi is really sushi made by a large army of sushi chefs that go unnamed and unrecognised who main job is to put money in DiNero and Nobu's fat pockets. I do not see any of the simplicity of sushi tradition in anything he does. I also wonder why he is unable to dress himself. He looks like a beggar. This is really a dime a dozen capitalism story about how a few celebrities can go on a massive and profitable ego trip, a journey in which the actual cuisine is beside the point. Nobu is yet another empty t-shirt looking for fame and as much money as possible. For lovers of actual artisan sushi there is nothing here. The one take away I got from this documentary is to avoid Nobu Sushi Inc sushi shops entirely. Though he seems like a lovely, but very edgy guy. I absolutely would not want to be one of his employes.

Really facinating portrait into an amazing artist

Really interesting look into a fascinating character. I didn't really know much about Nobu before seeing the movie, but he is really interesting. What he has gone through and how he has found success as a Chef and a businessman I found to be really amazing. There are some interviews in the movie that shine a light on who Nobu is and what he has gone though in his life. Really enjoyed the movie and how we feel like we are a fly on the wall while he is managing the restaurant and interacting with his customers. Great doc!
