Racing Toward Chaos, Braking on Story

What happens when a film revs its engines with action-comedy ambition but stalls on execution? Pard 888 tries to merge fast-paced street racing with slapstick humor, aiming for thrills and laughs, but ends up more exhausting than exhilarating. The story follows a group of eccentric racers whose rivalry spirals into a series of chaotic events on and off the track. While the premise promises adrenaline-fueled action, the film quickly shifts focus toward broad comedy-exaggerated antics, caricatured villains, and over-the-top gags dominate the narrative. Instead of tightly choreographed races or suspenseful stakes, audiences are given disjointed skits loosely strung together by a thin plot that revolves around racing.Analytically, the film's strength lies in its high energy and occasional bursts of visual spectacle. The racing sequences, though inconsistent, provide flashes of excitement, and the cast's willingness to throw themselves into slapstick routines reflects the irreverent spirit of Thai comedy at the time. For younger viewers, its loud humor and colorful style might spark nostalgic amusement. However, weaknesses overwhelm. The narrative is shallow, with little character development or emotional investment. Humor relies heavily on repetition and crude exaggeration, losing impact after the first act. The tonal shifts between racing action and comedic parody feel abrupt, leaving the film without a stable identity. Instead of blending genres, it dilutes both, offering neither intense action nor memorable comedy.Rating: 2/10.Summary: Pard 888 delivers chaotic energy and fleeting fun but suffers from weak storytelling, repetitive gags, and uneven tone, making it more of a noisy childhood memory than a lasting action-comedy.

Where was the script or storyline?...

I had the opportunity to sit down here in 2021 to watch the 2016 Thai comedy from writer and director Poj Arnon.

Sure, I hadn't even heard about "Pard 888" (aka "888 Fast Thai") before sitting down to watch it. So I didn't know what I was in for. Nor did I know who was on the cast list. But I opted to sit down and watch it regardless, as I hadn't already seen the movie.

Yeah, and I might as well have skipped on this particular comedy, because it was a train wreck of a movie. Well, actually more appropriately a bus wreck of a movie - if I am to keep it within the confines of the movie.

The storyline told in "Pard 888", as written by Poj Arnon, just failed to provide me with much of any entertainment. Sure, there were some funny scenes here and there scattered throughout the course of the movie. But the fact that there weren't really any proper script here or much of any coherent storyline, the it felt like it was just one long improvised sketch. And that ultimately didn't provide me with the entertainment that I had hoped for.

Sure, "Pard 888" does have a good ensemble of casted actors and actresses on the cast list, with the likes of Kom Chuanchuen, Aramboy Kohtee, Jazz Chuanchuen and Kunatip Pinpradab. However, given the chaotic script and the lack of a red thread throughout the entire movie, then there was just so much that these comedians could do to carry the movie.

There are far better Thai comedies out there, so take heed and give "Pard 888" a wide berth. It just simply isn't worth the time, money or effort.

I am rating "Pard 888" a mere three out of ten stars. While I managed to endure the movie to the very end, then I can't really claim that I was overly entertained. Yet I stuck with it, hoping that writer and director Poj Arnon would improve on it. That just never happened.
