Very Korean

My Korean-born wife and I watch a lot of standup comedy, both streaming and in person (We lived in Las Vegas for 20 years). But I guess it's our diet of K-dramas that prompted the Netflix AI to recommend this special to us. OK, we gave it a try. First off, Ms. Park has a lot of energy and charisma. But her approach to stand up seems uniquely Korean. She spends the first 20 minutes mired in a meta backstory about the raunchy stories to come which caused both my wife and I to roll our eyes and wish she would get to those stories. (Note: some comedians, like Dave Chappelle and Jerry Seinfeld have genius-level comedy so their rambling is just as funny as the main course. That is not the case with Ms. Park)

Once she does get to a few ribald tales, no surprise, they are not all that dirty. Now, for a conservative society like S. Korea I'm sure it's a big deal that a woman is telling these tales about her sexual liberation. But for those of us who have marveled and laughed loudly at the depravity of Nikki Glasser, her revelations are quite tame and boring.

She tells us about her weird, chaste relationship with an ex-boyfriend who never wanted any intimate contact with her. (Ha, ha, not funny, just weird). Like any good K-drama, she links her sexual exploits and sexual liberation to drinking - this is the opposite of legal and ethical mores in the West where issues of non-intoxicated consent are taken seriously. But the largely female audience seemed to enjoy her set. It was well-calibrated for them. But if you're used to tight, well-written and funny-dirty (think of any celebrity roast) comedy, then this will not be for you.

Awkward and devoid of comedy...

I stumbled upon the 2019 stand-up comedy special from Park Na-Rae by random chance whilst perusing the Netflix catalogue of stand-up comedy shows. And this was actually my first introduction to Korean stand-up comedy. I was familiar with Park Na-Rae from the "Zombieverse" series.

I have to say that I didn't find Park-Na Rae to be funny at all. It was a strained affair to sit through the jokes and watch her stumble about on the stage. Perhaps it was the language barrier that caused the comedy to lose its luster and laughter in translation. I suppose the "Park Na-Rae: Glamour Warning" show would be more fun if you speak and understand Korean, and not have to read the subtitles.

It was somewhat awkward to watch Park Na-Rae on the stage, as it was like watching a fish out of water on the scene.

I ended up giving up on watching "Park Na-Rae: Glamour Warning" after a mere 15 minutes, but by then I just couldn't take anymore of the suffering and the boredom that was passing on the screen. Park Na-Rae certainly was not a comedian that appealed to my taste in comedy or my sense of humor. And I have zero interest in returning to attempt watching the rest of the show.

My rating of "Park Na-Rae: Glamour Warning" lands on a two out of ten stars.
