Close the Bible, leave this church and find a new one

Pastor Shirley is yet another addition to Tubi's ever-growing catalog of original films, and I say this with no exaggeration: this platform has become notorious for producing some of the most head-scratching, low-quality movies out there. That being said, I do appreciate the fact that Tubi gives filmmakers and actors opportunities they might not otherwise get. But Pastor Shirley is a reminder that opportunity doesn't always equal quality. What makes this film so baffling is that it actually features a few recognizable actors. People you'd think would read the script, see the direction (or lack thereof), and run the other way. Which leaves you asking - why did they agree to this project? The answer might never be clear, but the result is undeniably a mess. The directing feels completely aimless, as if scenes were stitched together without any clear vision. One moment you're in the middle of an emotional beat, and the next you're thrown into a different scenario altogether. It's jarring, not in an experimental way, but in a "we didn't know what we were doing" kind of way. And while it's tempting to blame the editing, I'd put most of the fault on the writing. The script feels like it was written on the fly, without a roadmap, without cohesion, and without a clear idea of what the story wanted to be.Pastor Shirley herself is another problem. She's played so over-the-top and eccentric that she feels like she wandered in from a completely different movie. At first, you might expect her wild personality to develop into something meaningful, maybe even compelling. But the film never takes her anywhere. Instead, it leans so far into excess that it becomes unintentionally funny. And that's really the only way to watch Pastor Shirley: as accidental comedy. It's not funny because of clever dialogue or smart humor - it's funny because it's so poorly executed, you can't help but laugh. It's the kind of movie you put on when you want to roast something with friends, not when you're looking for genuine storytelling. In the end, Pastor Shirley is a prime example of why Tubi gets a bad reputation for its originals. It's chaotic, poorly written, and tonally inconsistent, despite having talent in front of the camera. If you're curious, watch it for the unintentional laughs. But if you're hoping for a real story, or something meaningful, save yourself the time - this one's flat-out a disaster.
