Eli Roth fans, behold, others, beware

Max is a young vinyl enthusiast who stumbles on a cache of rare, valuable records made by a hippie cult. One album is missing, and in her search to find it, she and her friends end up at the murderous group's compound.I went into this blind and was totally digging the characters and Empire Records/Clerks vibe. Unfortunately, the tone changes once they arrived at the Mission of Light, and the fun gets replaced by gore and relentless discomfort. That could have been okay if the hippies were interesting, campy, or compelling in any way - but they're not, they're unlikable and undeveloped. If you're into Eli Roth or Rob Zombie movies, it definitely exudes those kind of vibes, and it's certainly well-made. But torture-porn isn't my thing, so I can't rate it higher. Which is a shame, because I really did like the first part of the movie.

Not a movie for everyone...

Another movie that I had indeed never even heard about prior to sitting down to watch it here in 2025. I had virtually no idea what I was in for.Writer Christopher Bickel, whom also directed the movie, put together a somewhat odd and a bit out there storyline and script. Not that it was a bad movie, because there were definitely enjoyable aspects to it. But it is somewhat of a niche movie, and it is not a narrative that will appeal to the general viewing audience at large. You need to have an interest in the bizarre and twisted in order to properly enjoy the movie that is "Pater Noster and the Mission of Light".I was not familiar with a single actress or actor on the cast list, which certainly was something that spoke in favor of the movie. The acting performances in "Pater Noster and the Mission of Light" were good. The effects in the movie were good, though you have to wait for a long, long time to get to see them. One thing that definitely was annoying about the movie, was the soundscape. I didn't enjoy the sound that they were utilizing during the scene with the cult ritual. That assault of sounds was just too much and sort of made it unbearable to sit through.Watchable, for sure, but this movie is not suitable for just about everyone. It is, however, not a movie that will grace my screen a second time.My rating of writer and director Christopher Bickel's 2024 movie "Pater Noster and the Mission of Light" lands on a five out of ten stars.

Solid Homage to Cult Cinema

TLDR: An interesting homage to old school cult cinema with a soundtrack that is strangely addictive. While an enjoyable watch, the film suffers from the normal issues with lower budget indie cinema in that that production value is lower and the script may have benefited from one more pass.Christopher Bickel does a solid job with his throw back cult film about a nefarious hippie commune who uses music to lure in an unsuspecting record store clerk into a situation straight out of 60's/70's psychedelic cinema. The cast here is fairly good with the standouts being Adara Starr as the main protagonist, Max, and I was thoroughly entertained by Mike Amason as Pater Noster. The rest of the cast rounds it out well enough considering the budgetary restraints. The gore, surprisingly, was ample and utilized a style befitting of the timeframe. Some cliches and tropes had me rolling my eyes at times, but with any homage to a classic style of cinema that is to be expected. I don't foresee that many audience members will capture anything new in this film, but it's use of music both as an inciting event and as a frame for the story was well done and not something that I see very often. The idea of a film having it's own score/soundtrack is a lost art in modern cinema and I really wish it would make a comeback. Short story long, this is an entertaining, throwback piece of low-budget cinema that deserves a watch by anyone who is a) a fan of folk music, b) a fan of cult cinema, and c) someone looking for something new to see but is tired of the bloated studio fare that is normally served up.
