Lest We Forget
Queen of a changing world.
This follow-up to "Victoria the Great" is a decent but quickly made account of Victoria's years as queen, beginning with her marriage to Prince Albert (Anton Walbrook) and going through important events during her reign where England ruled much of the world. Anna Neagle repeats her role and this time is seen in color as the success of the original film convinced her husband, producer and director Herbert Wilcox, to add a little spice to the film story and a little metaphor indicating her colorful world. It's pretty episodic, showing how she takes charge and controversy concerning her choice of consort.
There has been much more detailed films, both on the big and small screens, on Victoria's reign, so you pretty much just get the cliff notes. Certainly with her rule being almost as long as her great great granddaughter Elizabeth's, there could have been at least three more films after the original covering different aspects of her reign and various problems. But it is an elegant film, with great detail taken to make Neagle look like color portraits of the great lady, and she does a very good job.
C. Aubrey Smith as the Duke of Wellington and Derrick De Marney as prime minister Disraeli offer historical authority in supporting parts. What really stands out about Victoria in this is that she remains a great lady but is very strong in her convictions and stands up admirably to the men who try to control her. The film also focuses heavily on the love story, pretty genuine, and gives an indication of how widowhood would greatly impact her. I wouldn't call this the definitive story of the greatest ruler of the 19th century, but being made on locations where it all happened does add to its historical impact.
