Great example of Positive Masculinity & Mindset

While I did expect the rock to be in it more than he was (based upon the trailer) it was heartwarming to see that he invested his time & energy to let those young men know they matter. I think too many of them never heard that. Or they didn't have the education or opportunities to realize it. The drill instructor Lopez was the best example of positive masculinity & leadership I've seen in a while. Someone like that makes a difference in that program because he knew instinctively when to push them & when to let up. He knew when to talk to them like people & when he needed to teach them important hard lessons. These young men obviously didn't have the resources, skills, or knowledge to succeed in life & I don't think they cared because no one outside their families showed them any support or positive encouragement. We expect men to know how to manage their emotions, but we don't teach them as boys how to handle any emotion other than anger. Then we're shocked that they act out inappropriately & they don't even understand why. It's patriarchy & toxic masculinity that failed these guys & many like them & not enough people talk about that. It's a societal failure. If more programs were actually set up with more emphasis on rehabilitation & gaining knowledge, skills, & discipline like this one I bet we'd see less recidivism. It does have to be presented as an either/or choice. Prison or reform. I would like to know how many of these young men find it to be such a life changing experience that they go on to join the military, because it seems like a logical next step for some, that way they can further their skills & education levels & hopefully stay out of prison. Very positive program & encouraging documentary. I wish more celebrities used their stories for good & paid it forward like this.

Great program with tangible results, apparently

From their website, it looks like the program genuinely works, which is amazing.

"The Miami-Dade County Corrections and Rehabilitation Department Boot Camp Program has resulted in a consistently low recidivism rate for its graduates - currently at 11 percent. This means that nearly 90 percent of all graduates are able to turn their lives around thanks to the training and mentoring they receive through the Boot Camp program."

As a documentary, nothing special.
