An uneven horror-drama with enough originality and tension to keep your attention

I recently watched Rounding (2022) on Shudder. The storyline follows a medical resident eager for a fresh start at a new hospital. He becomes obsessed with a hospitalized asthma patient who may need a lung transplant, but he believes there are better alternatives to the surgery. As he tries to convince the patient to pursue other options, demons from his past that led to his transfer begin to resurface. This picture is directed by Alex Thompson (Ghostlight) and stars Namir Smallwood (Chicago Fire), Sidney Flanigan (The Low End Theory), Michael Potts (The Wire), and Edwin Lee Gibson (The Bear). If "mind your business" was a movie, this would be it. The film has a unique premise and tells its story effectively from the medical student's perspective. It's a thoughtful take on obsession and how it can infiltrate every part of your life, breaking down your mental health. The acting is excellent-Namir Smallwood delivers a strong and convincing lead performance. The writing, however, is a bit inconsistent. Some scenes feel over the top or unrealistic, where you'd expect adults or supervisors to intervene. Still, several subplots and medical backstories are well told and genuinely fascinating. Watching the main character ignore obvious red flags becomes frustrating at times, but it serves the story's theme of obsession well. The visions near the end were wild and completely unexpected, taking the film in a direction I didn't anticipate. Also, there's a standout autopsy sequence worth mentioning. In conclusion, Rounding is an uneven horror-drama with enough originality and tension to keep your attention. I'd score this one 6/10.

A Phenomenal Waste of Time

I suppose there's a story somewhere inside this medical drama/horror offering, but I'll be damned if I can find it. Writer-director Alex Thompson's second feature outing is a plodding, dull, meandering mess in which viewers wait patiently for something to happen and nothing ever does. When a brilliant young medical resident suffers a breakdown after losing a patient, he transfers to a small town hospital for a second chance, upon which he becomes obsessed with the mysterious symptoms of a respiratory patient. What follows is an unorganized collection of vague (and unscary) surreal images, tiresome dialogue laden with detailed medical jargon, unexplained and implausible plot developments, and a story that ultimately goes nowhere, one that even requires an explanation by one of the characters to inform the audience of what supposedly just happened. "Rounding" is a phenomenal waste of time that fails to live up to any of its hype - or potential.

Artistic and Something to Think About

A great film, in my opnion, and I don't usually like thrillers. For days afterward, the story kept rolling around in my head. I hope I get a chance to see it again and even discuss it with a fellow viewer. This was no common film, but a meticulous work of art. In the opening scenes, the purposeful use of silence and sound grabbed me right away and immersed me in the story. There was an economy to it, in that there didn't seem to be any fluff: Every moment of the film seemed to be important and seemed to keep the story moving forward.
